Honda India Adds Third Assembly Line To Its Scooter-Only Plant In Gujrat

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has expanded its two-wheeler manufacturing plant in Vithalapur, Gujarat, with the inauguration of a third assembly line on January 5. This new line enhances the production capacity by 6.5 lakh units per annum. The Honda India Vithalapur facility, characterized as Honda's largest scooter-only plant globally, reflects the company's commitment to meeting the rising demand for its products in the Indian market.

Honda India Expands Scooter Production

The Vithalapur facility plays a crucial role in the production of Honda's popular scooters, including the Activa, Dio, Activa 125, and Dio 125. In addition to scooter manufacturing, the Gujarat plant houses a dedicated engine line. This engine line serves as a cornerstone for the production of global engines, specifically for 250cc and above two-wheelers. These engines cater to overseas demand, reaching markets such as Thailand, the US, Europe, and Japan. Honda considers India a pivotal production base globally, particularly in the domain of two-wheeler manufacturing.

Tsutsumu Otani, President, MD, and CEO of HMSI, expressed, "To serve customers more efficiently with speed, undertaking this capacity expansion plan will increase HMSIs total annual production volumes significantly." The Gujarat plant, under HMSI, not only manufactures scooter models for the domestic market but also caters to export markets, contributing to the ongoing trend of scooterization globally.

In addition to the positive impact on production capacity, the expansion at the Vithalapur plant has led to the creation of additional employment opportunities. As part of their plans, HMSI aims to augment the number of female workers in the manufacturing area, emphasizing diversity and inclusivity in the workforce.
