Union Budget 2026, presented on 1st February, Sunday, by Honourable Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitaraman, felt like an inspiring scenic portrait - the kind we usually place in our drawing rooms, admire with hopeful eyes, and then move on. Whatever was presented in the budget looked appealing on paper, but it is unlikely to change ground realities, especially for normal tax-paying customers, and the same holds true for the two-wheeler segment in India. But let's discuss this in detail and understand what exactly unfolded. In the meantime, do join our  91Wheels Whatsapp Channel to never miss out on the latest automotive updates.

Union Budget 2026

For two-wheelers, including gasoline-running models and EVs, there will be no price cut or tax cut, mainly because in September 2025, the government reduced GST rates, which made motorcycles and scooters under 350cc more affordable. This acted as a major boost and resulted in strong sales figures. However, for 2026, there is no specific change that will directly impact potential customers.

For long-term growth of the two-wheeler sector, especially EVs, the Union Budget 2026 focuses on strengthening the overall ecosystem rather than offering direct consumer benefits. The government is pushing domestic manufacturing by encouraging localisation of EV components, improving supply chains, and boosting production through incentive schemes.

There is also a strong emphasis on research and development to improve battery technology, efficiency, and performance. Alongside this, expansion of charging infrastructure is being prioritised to reduce range anxiety and make EV adoption easier. Additionally, support for semiconductor production, rare-earth material sourcing, and broader mobility infrastructure development is expected to make the two-wheeler industry more stable, technologically advanced, and cost-efficient in the coming years.

Verdict

Union Budget 2026 takes a foundation-building approach towards the two-wheeler industry rather than delivering immediate consumer relief. While buyers looking for price cuts or fresh subsidies may find the budget underwhelming, the government's focus clearly lies in strengthening India's long-term mobility ecosystem.

However, the budget also has its limitations. There are no direct incentives, tax reliefs, or price reductions aimed at immediate buyers, which may disappoint customers expecting short-term affordability benefits. Additionally, while infrastructure and manufacturing support have been announced, the actual impact will largely depend on execution, policy continuity, and industry participation.
