Nowadays, the safety rating of vehicles is given due importance by the new car buyers. All thanks to the GNCAPs (Global New Car Assessment Program), #SaferCarsforIndia campaign, the awareness about the four wheelers safety standards has shot through the roof. In line with this, we bring a comprehensive list of the lowest safety rating cars under Rs. 20 lakh, that are currently on sale in the Indian market.

Mahindra Scorpio Classic - 0 Star

The OG Scorpio from the car manufacturer that is renowned for making safe cars scored a disappointing 0 star in the GNCAP crash test results. Although the SUV was tested in the year 2016, the results still remain relevant as its latest iteration still uses the same body structure and ladder frame construction. Talking about the detailed results, the four-wheeler got 0 points out of 17 for adult safety and 16.73 points out of 49 for child safety.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso- 0 Star

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso with a single driver side airbag scored a poor 0 star in the crash test. It achieved 0 points out of 17 for adult occupant protection and 13.84 out of 49 for child occupant protection, translating into individual ratings of 0 and 2 stars respectively. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings.

Renault Kwid- 1 Star

Renault May Discount hatchbacks

The latest Renault Kwid scored an overall 1 star in the GNCAP crash test results. The ratings for both the adult as well as child stood at 1 star. The hatch tested only had a single driver side airbag and the body shell integrity was rated as unstable.

Maruti Suzuki Swift- 2 Stars

One of the best-selling hatchbacks of Indian market, the Maruti Suzuki Swift managed to achieve 2 stars in the GNCAP crash test results. It scored 7.08 points out of total 17 for adult occupant protection and 16.23 points out of 49 for child occupant protection. Like every other low safety rating vehicle, the body shell integrity of Swift is rated as unstable.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios- 2 Stars

The latest hatchback from the Korean auto major scored an overall 2 star safety rating in the crash test results. When looked upon in detail, the Grand i10 Nios achieved 7.05 points out of 17 for adult occupant protection and 15 out of 49 points in child safety ratings. The body shell integrity as well as footwell area was also rated as unstable.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga- 3 Stars

The popular 7-seater MPV bagged 3 stars in the GNCAP crash test result which was conducted in the year 2019. With 2 airbags on-board, the Ertiga scored 3 stars in the both adult and child occupant protection. The bodyshell integrity was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further load.

Kia Carens- 3 Stars

Lowest Safety Ratings Cars

The shocker in the list which offers 6 airbags as standard is the Kia Carens. With a host of standard safety tech on board, the Carens only scored 3 stars in the GNCAP crash test results. 9.30 points out of 17 for adult and 30.99 points out of 49 for child occupant protection translates into a combined score of 3 stars. The bodyshell and footwell area were rated as unstable and they were not capable of withstanding further loadings.

Kia Seltos- 3 Stars

Boot space SUVs

The second Kia vehicle with lowest safety rating is the Seltos mid-size SUV. Tested in the year 2020 with 2 airbags, it scored 3 stars in the crash test results. For reference, the Seltos was updated with 6 airbags as standard in August 2022. The individual scores for adult and child occupant protection stands at 3 stars and 2 stars respectively.

Hyundai Creta- 3 Stars

Hyundai Creta Front Side Profile

The Korean mid-size SUV scored a satisfactory 3 star rating in the crash test results. With 8 points out of 17 in the adult occupant protection, the Creta just managed to touch the 3 star rating. The child occupant protection also stood at 3 star. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings. Footwell area was also rated as unstable.

Hyundai i20- 3 Stars

Last but not the least, the premium hatchback's safety rating is in-line with its siblings. The Hyundai i20 scored an overall rating of 3 stars in the crash test results. Pointwise, it stood at 8.84 out of 17 for adult occupant protection and 36.89 out of 49 for child occupant protection. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings.

Apart from the vehicles mentioned above, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 with no airbags also scored 0 star in the GNCAP crash test conducted in the year 2014. However, the latest 2022 Alto K10 is yet to be tested for its safety ratings. Additionally the WagonR with a single driver airbag got 2 stars in the crash test conducted in 2019.

Verdict: With the rising awareness, car manufacturers are also taking active steps to enhance the safety of the vehicles by adding standards safety features. Some of the lowest safety rating cars in this article are one of the best selling vehicles in their segment, which somehow speaks loads about the choice of customers. Contrary to this, we believe that safety should play an important role while buying a new car.
