Expert Speak

The little S-Presso is a hit in smaller towns. Good alternative to the Alto / Kwid, the SUV-ish stance seems to be working well.

About Maruti S-Presso

First shown at the 2018 Auto Expo as the Future S concept, the S Presso came as a radical entry into the small car segment. It looks different and is often the centre of a debate when it comes to the design language. That said, it has gained success in India and is among the small cars sold today. The front sands out, thanks to the tallish stance and the ‘toothy’ grille that makes it look a like a Mahindra. The matt black bumpers at either ends, even for the top end versions, give it a rather butch
appeal. The S Presso also boasts of generous ground clearance and a simple looking rear end. The cabin is impressive. It is a narrow place to be but ergonomically sorted and well laid out. You sit higher up, so a commanding view is never an issue. The centrally placed console does not look out for place either and the touch screen set-up is functional too.
But the USP of the S Presso is its engine. The punchy 1.0 petrol unit feels eager and this thing can easily give you grinning moments. The AMT too seems to have been calibrated really well and urban users will love the S Presso for its agility. However, that said, it isn’t sorted as far as dynamics go and you need to be careful before giving in steering inputs. But overcome this and the S Press rewards you from time to time.
The Maruti S Presso rivals the Renault KWID and though the latter has an impressive front end and more space on the inside, do give this one a serious look and a proper test drive before finalising your decision. It is that good!
