Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is powered by the BS6-compliant version of the K10B 1.0-litre, three-pot, naturally-aspirated petrol engine that was found under the hood of the Alto K10. The engine puts out a maximum power of 68 PS at 5,500 rpm and a peak torque of 90 Nm at 3,500 rpm. Given the low kerb weight of just 726 kg, the low capacity petrol motor makes this budget car a pretty sprightly performer. Even the transmission options come from the K10 and include a 5-speed manual unit as well as a 5-speed AMT.
There’s enough grunt on tap right from the moment you start driving this car and the torque spread is spread out pretty well across the rev range. In fact, the motor loves to be revved till the redline and the performance is so good that it makes S-Presso the most fun car in its segment. Coupled with the low kerb weight, the motor, along with the well-defined gear ratios, enables the driver to pick up speed from as low as 5 kmph in second gear. The great tractability even leads to fewer gearshifts (and hence higher fuel efficiency) when driving on the congested urban streets.
Even the AMT is a pretty smooth-shifting unit with the inherent laggy and jerky performance of Automated Manual Transmissions being well-controlled here. The gearshifts take place at low RPMs when you drive with a light foot but the transmission holds on to each gear till the very redline when you really step on the gas. The downshifts, however, should have been a tad quicker. Still, this is the best AMT available in its price segment. Moreover, the fuel efficiency is best-in-class with up to 16 kmpl being easily achievable in cities and more than 20 kmpl on the smooth expressways.
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso might be a bit boring to look at but it is definitely a lot of fun when in the hands of a driving enthusiast. It's also pretty frugal.
Previewed by the Maruti Future-S concept at the Auto Expo 2018, the S-Presso is a far cry from the radical-looking design study. It is natural for many production cars to look different from their concept versions but the S-Presso and Future-S differ as much as chalk and cheese. While the former is all about a boxy body form with plain surfaces and uninspiring lines, the latter is a rather future-proof take on a crossover-inspired compact car.
In fact, the S-Presso looks even more boring than the Renault Kwid as the French budget car benefits from many Duster-inspired styling cues. Unfortunately, one can’t find much of Brezza in S-Presso’s styling theme.

Clearly, the designers of this compact car have adopted a function-over-form approach that has led to a very practical interior but more on that later. The front-end has a slight glimpse of the Maruti Vitara Brezza with a high-set hood and a sleek upper grille. The two-tone bumper attempts to validate the car’s SUV aspirations while the horizontally oriented LED DRLs, which, mind you, are optional extras, infuse some premiumness into the design.
In the profile, the S-Presso looks rather slab-sided with soft creases and huge expanse of sheet-metal along with the rather smallish DLO (Daylight Opening). Fortunately, the black plastic cladding on the car’s side skirts provide some visual relief. The rear-end is where the car’s styling gets a bit interesting. The highlights here include a stylish set of taillamps, a discreet roof spoiler and a two-tone bumper that compliments the front-end.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso would not win any beauty contests but it does look like a compact crossover that can be taken off the beaten tarmac.
First things first, unlike the exterior, the interior of the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso does seem to have a visual connection with the concept. True, you don’t get the uber cool suicide doors present on the concept but you do get a round centre console that is positioned inside a casing. It features the 7.0-inch SmartPlay Studio infotainment system and in words of the carmaker, its design has been inspired from the dial of a modern-day digital wrist watch. The steering comes from the Maruti parts bin and looks pretty sporty, while the plastic quality is acceptable for a car of this class.
While the Maruti S-Presso is not a big car by any stretch of the imagination, its interior will probably make you feel otherwise. The cabin is airy and has enough space to accommodate four full-grown adults. The driver seat has been set up pretty high, which gives the driver a good view of the road. Now, this is something that’s typical of SUVs and it works in favour of the small car. Passengers in both the rows benefit from good legroom and all the seats are quite supportive. However, the rear seats beg for a larger pair of headrests. With a boot-space of 270-litre, the S-Presso won’t be able to swallow a lot of luggage but it’s almost as much as Kwid’s 277-litre and much more than redi-GO’s 222-litre.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is small on the outside but its interior is sufficiently spacious and even practical for a small family.
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is based on the carmaker’s HEARTECT-K platform. This is not only related to the HEARTECT platform used on costlier cars like the Swift and the Baleno, but it’s also related to the Japanese Suzuki Alto that finds itself positioned in the Kei car category. As expected, the modern architecture has helped the S-Presso with good high-speed dynamics. The small car, in spite of its low kerb weight, feels planted even at high speeds and the steering is very responsive and direct. That said, there’s a slight vagueness around the dead-centre but that’s something we’ve come to expect from all low-cost Maruti Suzuki offerings.
Moreover, the steering wheel stays ultra light even as the speeds rise, which is surely something that gets a bit unnerving in the corners but a dull steering apart, the S-Presso is a really fun car to drive. Besides, the light steering is a boon in the urban environment. Another highlight here is the pretty matured ride quality. The suspension is soft enough to keep you comfortable on broken patches of road while the ride stays quite pliant even at high speeds. There is some body roll when changing lanes at high speeds but it’s nothing that can’t be easily overlooked.

Disappointingly, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso has bagged a zero-star rating in Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia crash tests. Speaking on the poor performance, Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP has said, “It is very disappointing that Maruti Suzuki, the manufacturer with the largest share of the Indian market, offers such low safety performance for Indian consumers. Domestic manufacturers like Mahindra and Tata have demonstrated high levels of safety and protection for their customers, both achieving five-star performance. Surely it’s time for Maruti Suzuki to demonstrate this commitment to safety for its customers?”
While none of S-Presso’s direct rivals have fared well in these crash tests, we would have still liked this small car to have scored better. Coming to the safety equipment on offer, the budget hatchback offers a standard driver airbag along with ABS, EBD and reverse parking sensors. The higher variants get the front passenger airbag, too, while buyers of other variants need to pay a premium of Rs 6,000 in order to get this important safety feature on their cars.
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is certainly not the safest car around but the least one could do when buying lower variants of this vehicle is to opt for the front passenger airbag by paying extra.
