Delhi Government Stops EV Subsidies - Here Is How It Will Impact You!

The market is now shifting towards electric vehicles and we are now seeing a number of new electric vehicles being launched in the country. Electric vehicles are also enjoying lucrative schemes and subsidies offered by various governments. Delhi government earlier had announced many such subsidies to give a push to the sales of electric cars in the state. The electric vehicle policy was introduced in August last year by Delhis Chief Minister Mr Arvind Kejriwal. The government had announced that the subsidies will only be available for the first thousand cars, subject to a cap of  INR 1.5 lakh per vehicle. Between the months of July and September, almost eight thousand electric vehicles were registered in Delhi. Between August and October, around twenty thousand electric vehicles were registered in the national capital. The buyers of electric cars however will no longer enjoy the Delhi EV subsidies and other discount policies from now onwards.

Subsidies on buying electric vehicles were one of the key features in Delhis Electricity Vehicle Policy. After the national capital witnessed a sharp rise in EV registrations in the past few weeks, the state government has decided to withdraw this. According to Kailash Gahlot, Transport Minister of Delhi, the government is not planning to extend the subsidy scheme on the purchase of electric vehicles any further.

As per Delhi's Transport Minister, the electric cars market has received the required push in Delhi. In the next phase, the government will now focus on taping the two-wheeler, freight and public transport segments of electric vehicles. These makeup for more than 10 million vehicles that have been registered in the state.

Delhi EV subsidies

The government believes that the electric cars on sale are now more affordable and the buyers purchasing these vehicles no longer require any additional subsidies. Hence, Delhi Government will now be focusing on reducing the costs of electric vehicles for commercial operators.

As per the official data records, over twenty-three thousand electric vehicles were registered in Delhi in the last three months. Out of these, 5,246 were two-wheelers while 10,997 were e-rickshaws. The government is now focusing on promoting e-auto rickshaws and e-buses. This will not only reduce the pollution levels but will also lower the demand for fossil fuels. In addition to this, the Delhi Government will only procure electric buses in the coming months for the state's transport department. However, it will be interesting to see how the new Delhi EV subsidies will impact the EV market.
