Honda Activa Electric Scooter: Launch Confirmed?
In a recent media interaction, Honda officials confirmed that they've plans to introduce electric scooters in India. While the names are not disclosed, there will primarily be two e-scooters launched initially. These scooters are likely to be based on the Activa brand name. To manufacture these scooters, Honda is working on expanding its production plant situated in Karnataka. A brand new production line is being set up there which is expected to get operational by December 2024.
Additionally to this, Honda is also planning to introduce a special production line in its Gujarat plant. These pipelines will be used to manufacture the upcoming e-scooters. Speaking on the upcoming EVs, Honda officials confirmed that both of the scooters might be introduced by March 2025 in India. Out of these two, one scooter will be targeted for budget-oriented buyers while the other will target the premium category.
There are no details available about these upcoming scooters but a hint from Honda has confirmed a few things. The lower version scooter will get a fixed battery and its platform will be more of a utilitarian type. Meanwhile, the second version, perhaps the Activa-E brand name, will be a premium offering with swappable batteries and better performance. Moreover, Honda plans to introduce battery-swapping at its 6,000 plus touchpoints across the country. By this, there will be no range anxiety among future Honda e-scooter buyers.
We suspect that Honda will position the Activa electric around premium rivals like Ola S1 Pro, Ather 450X, and Hero Vida V1. If so, the pricing of the premium Activa-E can range between Rs 1.50-1.75 lakh (introductory).

Verdict
Japanese manufacturers are known for taking time before stepping in a new market. Honda two-wheelers have been closely watching the EV game for long now. With EV two-wheeler market booming, it seems the right time to introduce the electric Activa among the segment. However, it won't come cheap and it'll also look very different than its ICE versions.
