Variant Recommendation

author

The Mahindra XUV 400 is available in 2 battery configurations along with 2 variants. The 34.5 kWh is the smaller battery pack and 39.5 kWh is the bigger version. The EC variant is the base model with fewer features and the EL variant is the top variant with the latest updates.

So if you are tight on budget, or considering EV on a budget then the base version i.e. 34.5 kWh EC PRO variant is the best choice. If you have a good budget and wish to upgrade, the EL PRO variant has the same battery configuration on offer. However, we don't find it as a VFM option.

Secondly, if you have range anxiety and require more range then upgrading to 39.5 kWh is the only option. If you want more cosmetic updates then opt for the dual-tone variant.

Pros & Cons of Mahindra XUV 400 Electric

  • Features we admire in this car

    • Bigger than the ICE Version, resulting in more space inside.
    • Has a range of 456 km (claimed). In real life, it would return more than 350 km.
    • Rear seats provide great under-thigh support.
    • It provides the biggest boot in the segment.
    • It has a punchy acceleration, quicker than its competition.
  • Features that could have been better

    • The exterior styling is overdone.
    • Looks very familiar to the ICE Version, XUV300.

Should I buy the XUV 400 Electric?

The Mahindra XUV400 is a great product in terms of design, performance, and range. It offers some best-in-segment features, such as dual-zone climate control. It also provides best-in-class space. The cabin quality is top class, with soft-touch materials inside. Overall, it’s a good product for consideration. If you're still not convinced about the XUV400, check competitors like the Tata Nexon EV. You could also upgrade your budget for the MG ZS EV.

Bold Looks With A Muscular Stance Similar To The Ice Version 8
  • The design language of the XUV 400 is almost identical to the regular ICE version. The grill is closed. New copper color elements are added to differentiate it. It has the same placement as the LED headlamps and DRLs are now replaced with copper accents. The throw from these headlights is decent and could have been better.
  • Coming to the side profile, it has the same 16” alloys which look nice on this version. The front left fender gets the placement for the charging port which is a thoughtful idea. The dual-tone treatment gives the XUV400 a macho presence.
  • At the rear, the design of the taillamps is much more appealing than the regular ICE version. The loading lib is a bit high which makes stuffing luggage in the boot a tedious task. In terms of boot space, it has the best space in its segment. It has a massive 378L of boot space.
Premium Interiors With Great Features On Offer 8
  • As we step inside the ambiance of the XUV400, there is a sense of premium appeal with sophistication. The all-new dashboard layout has made it more appealing. The addition of new features has made it an attractive deal on offer.
  • The dashboard gets a dual-tone treatment which lightens up the ambiance. The presence of the sunroof brings in more light. The dashboard gets a gloss-black treatment. It might become a fingerprint magnet in the long run.
  • Now in the update, it gets a new 10.25” touchscreen infotainment. The new infotainment has wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes TPMS and many other features. Some cool features like dual-zone climate control and a new instrument cluster are great addition to the competition.
Punchy Performance With No Range Anxiety 8.5
  • The Mahindra XUV400 is offered in 2 battery packs, 34.5 kWh and 39.5 kWh in both variants. In addition, it gets two PMSM motors at the front. This results in quick acceleration and a punchier performance.
  • The motor has a peak performance of 150 BHP and 310Nm of peak torque. The main concern that comes with an EV is the range.
  • The 34.5 kWh battery pack has a claimed range of 375 km. In real life, it would return about 280-325 km of range depending on the driving style and modes you are driving. It has 2 modes on offer that will alter the performance of the motor and the range. The Fun mode is the economy mode, providing most of the range with a sluggish performance. Fast mode is the Sports mode with decent performance and range.
  • The 39.5 kWh battery pack has a claimed range of 465 km. In real life, it would return more than 375 km easily. It has 3 modes on offer which will alter the performance of the motor and the range. The Fun mode is the economy mode, providing most of the range with a sluggish performance. Fast mode is the normal mode with decent performance and range. The Fearless mode is the sports mode. It has an aggressive motor response and drains the battery life faster.
Comfortable Rear Seat And Steering Feel And Feedback 9
  • The suspensions of the XUV400 are tuned on the softer side. It absorbs the bumps very well and rides become a bit bouncy on the higher speeds. The body roll is well-contained and is stable around the corners.
  • The seating comfort of the XUV400 is top-class. It provides one of the best comforts in its segment. It has great knee, leg, and shoulder room for 3 passengers at the rear.
  • The feel and feedback from the steering wheel are decent. In city conditions, it feels lightweight and comfortable to maneuver in the traffic. Taking it on highways and at triple-digit speeds, it weighs up decently well and provides confidence in pushing it hard.
Charging Time Is Not An Issue 8
  • The XUV400 comes with two battery packs for the customers. With a slow AC Charger, it would roughly take about 13-14 hours to charge. Using a fast DC Charger, it would roughly complete a full charge in 50 minutes using a 50 kW charger.

The biggest competition to the XUV400 is the Tata NEXON EV. In its recent updates, the Nexon EV got much more updated both in terms of exterior and interior. Both are available in low and high-range variants. This will be specific to the high-range models. The XUV400 EL PRO is the latest update in the lineup with new additions in the interior. In terms of range, XUV400 claims about 465 km on a single charge but in real life, it would return more than 375 km easily. The Nexon EV long-range variant has a claimed range of 456 km. But in real life, it will return only about 300-350 km. The Mahindra XUV 400 has much more punchy performance. It's more tractable than the slightly sluggish performance in the Nexon EV. Both offer great tech and features inside. But the XUV400 goes a step further by offering dual-zone climate control. In contrast, the Nexon EV offers an Arcade EV mode where you can play games or watch Netflix.

The next competition on the list is the MG ZS EV. MG ZS EV is a bit on the premium side. However, it still faces tough competition from the XUV400 in terms of sales and road presence. Both are more than 4m in length, but the space inside ZS EV has an upper hand over the XUV400. MG ZS EV is longer and taller than XUV 400. However, the XUV400 is wider and has a longer wheelbase. This adds a bit of premiumness inside the cabin. The major concern is the range provided, so the ZS EV has a claimed range of 461 km and the XUV400 has a claimed range of 465 km. In the real world, both would return approximately the same ranges. They exceed 350 km when driven sedately. XUV400 takes the lead over the ZS EV by offering more features. For example, it has wireless charging and dual-zone climate control.
