Ather EL01 Electric Scooter Spied Testing: Brand's Most Affordable Model

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ather EL01 spotted testing ahead of 2026 launch
  • Will be based on a new EL platform with a steel unibody frame
  • Battery options likely between 2 kWh and 4 kWh

Ather Energy is preparing to expand its portfolio with a new electric scooter aimed at a more accessible price bracket, and the upcoming Ather EL01 has now been spotted undergoing road tests. The test mule, seen under heavy camouflage in Bengaluru, offers the first real-world glimpse of what could become Ather's most affordable offering when it arrives, likely towards the end of 2026. Previewed earlier as a near-production concept, the EL01 appears to stay largely faithful to its original design direction, signalling that the production version may not deviate significantly from what has already been showcased. Ather EL01: Design & Styling Stays True To Its Concept

Despite the heavy camouflage, a few key design elements of the Ather EL01 are clearly visible. The EL01 features a handlebar-mounted headlamp setup, while the front apron houses a wide LED daytime running light that stretches across the width. There are also indications of an illuminated Ather logo positioned above the DRL, similar to what was seen on the concept model. The scooter appears to adopt a practical, family-oriented design with a flat floorboard and a long, single-piece seat aimed at improving everyday usability. At the rear, a wide LED taillight can be partially seen beneath the camouflage, suggesting a clean and modern lighting signature.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a 14-inch front wheel, making it the first Ather scooter to feature this setup. The rear wheel is likely to be smaller, possibly a 12-inch unit, although the new platform is capable of supporting different wheel sizes. The EL01 will be built on Ather's all-new EL platform, which focuses on cost efficiency and scalability. Unlike the brand's existing scooters that use aluminium-heavy construction, this new model adopts a steel unibody frame, aimed at reducing production costs while maintaining structural integrity. Suspension duties are expected to be handled by telescopic forks at the front and a rear monoshock, similar to the Rizta. However, the positioning of the rear suspension appears to have been revised, likely to allow for greater travel and improved ride comfort.

Battery, Features, & Practicality

The new EL platform is designed to support a wide range of battery capacities, from 2 kWh to 5 kWh. For the EL01, Ather is expected to offer configurations in the 2 kWh to 4 kWh range, catering to both budget-conscious buyers and those seeking better range. An integrated onboard charger is also expected, removing the need for an external charging unit and improving convenience.

However, this could come at the cost of slightly reduced underseat storage compared to the Rizta. In terms of features, base variants are likely to focus on essentials, while higher trims could include a TFT display, smartphone connectivity, and additional ride modes or software-based features. Ather may also continue offering flexible ownership options like Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS).

With testing now underway, the EL01 is expected to make its debut around the festive season of 2026, possibly in the final quarter of the year. In terms of pricing, it is likely to be positioned between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.30 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the most affordable Ather scooter to date.

Verdict

The Ather EL01 represents an important step in the brand's expansion strategy, as it aims to reach a wider audience with a more accessible electric scooter. By combining a new cost-effective platform with practical design and scalable battery options, Ather is positioning the EL01 as a strong contender in the growing entry-level EV segment. If executed well, it could significantly boost the brand's presence and competitiveness in a space currently dominated by value-focused offerings, where Ather already has a pretty solid brand name.
