Kia Sorento First Spy Shots: What We Know

The test mule of the Kia Sorento spotted in India appears to be close to production-ready, and notably, it is a right-hand-drive model. Despite the camouflage, key design elements are clearly visible. The SUV features Kia's signature vertical headlamp design, which immediately gives away its identity. It also rides on large 20-inch alloy wheels, similar to those seen on the global-spec model. The overall proportions suggest a large SUV with a strong road presence, aided by its wide stance and long body. Globally, the Sorento measures around 4.8 metres in length, which would place it among the larger SUVs in its segment in India.

The Kia Sorento carries a traditional SUV silhouette with a boxy yet refined design. Its upright stance, long wheelbase, and wide track hint at a spacious cabin inside. Even with heavy camouflage, the vehicle's proportions indicate that it will offer strong road presence, positioning itself as a premium family SUV rather than a compact or lifestyle-focused product.
Features & Interior Expectations
Inside, the Sorento is expected to follow Kia's modern design philosophy with a clean and tech-forward cabin layout. Based on the global-spec model, it is likely to feature a large dual-screen setup that integrates the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster. The equipment list could include a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, heads-up display, and a premium 12-speaker Bose sound system. Higher variants are also expected to offer electrically adjustable seats for both driver and passenger, along with Level 2 ADAS features for enhanced safety and convenience.

Powertrain & Hybrid Tech
Kia has confirmed that the Sorento for India will feature hybrid technology. The setup is expected to pair a petrol engine, likely a 1.5-litre unit with an electric motor to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. An all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is also expected to be part of the package, enhancing capability across different driving conditions. While full technical specifications are yet to be revealed, the hybrid approach will help address concerns around fuel efficiency in large SUVs. While it may take some time for its launch, interstiungly, the Kia Syros EV has been confirmed for a July 2026 launch, making it the entry-level EV in Kia's portfolio, when launched.

Kia has indicated that the Sorento will be launched in India before 2030, but based on current developments and test sightings, a more realistic timeline could be around early 2027. In terms of pricing, the SUV is expected to be positioned in the Rs 30 lakh to Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom) bracket. This places it in a relatively under-served segment, where it could compete with models like the Jeep Meridian while offering an alternative to more expensive options like the Toyota Fortuner.
Verdict
The arrival of the Kia Sorento could fill a crucial gap in India's SUV market, offering a premium three-row option that sits between mainstream and full-size SUVs. With hybrid technology, a strong feature list, and Kia's proven brand appeal, it has the potential to attract buyers looking to upgrade without stretching into the luxury segment. But it all boils down to the kind of pricing it comes at, the Sorento could emerge as a strong contender in a space that currently has limited options.
