Tata Sierra EV (2026): Electric RWD and AWD From Day One

Tata will roll out the Sierra EV in 2026 with rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations right from launch. The electric Tata Sierra is based on the brand's new acti.ev+ platform, a skateboard-style architecture engineered for multi-motor layouts, faster charging, advanced driver-assistance tech, and improved cabin packaging. The Sierra EV's styling and cabin are expected to carry forward the clean, upright proportions showcased on its ICE sibling, but with more pronounced EV cues, sealed surfaces, distinctive lighting signatures, and aerodynamic optimisation. Tata is aiming for a premium positioning, slotting the electric Sierra between the Curvv EV and Harrier EV, and targeting rivals like the Hyundai Creta EV, Mahindra BE.6, MG ZS EV, and Maruti e-Vitara.

Battery details remain under wraps, but Tata is likely to reuse familiar hardware of a 55kWh pack from the Curvv EV (paired with a 167hp motor) and a 65kWh pack from the Harrier EV (paired with a 238hp motor) Thanks to its multi-layer battery architecture, the Sierra EV will support fast-charging and ADAS Level-2 capabilities, making it one of Tata's most tech-forward offerings. Production will take place at the company's upgraded Sanand plant, which will manufacture both ICE and EV versions side by side.

While the ICE Sierra has already debuted in front-wheel-drive form with 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engine options, the all-wheel-drive version is confirmed for an early-2027 launch. This marks Tata's return to the ICE AWD space after the Hexa bowed out in 2020, a gap enthusiasts have been vocal about. The credit goes to the new ARGOS platform (All-terrain Ready, Omni-Energy and Geometry Scalable Architecture), which underpins the Sierra. Although primarily a FWD monocoque, ARGOS has been engineered to accommodate ICE AWD configurations, something Tata deliberately planned after witnessing rising consumer interest in AWD SUVs.

Interestingly, Tata reveals that AWD accounts for 35% of Harrier EV sales, significantly higher than projected. This strong demand strengthens the business case for a Sierra AWD, especially since the brand's SUV legacy has long been associated with rugged, capable 4x4s. While Tata hasn't confirmed which engine will get AWD, the diesel automatic remains the most probable candidate. The ICE Sierra AWD will position Tata back into a niche currently underserved in the mainstream SUV market.

Why Tata Is Betting Big On AWD Again

Tata Motors acknowledges that buyers increasingly see AWD as 'part of the SUV's personality.' And with rivals largely sticking to FWD or mild traction aids, the Sierra AWD could become one of the very few authentic AWD monocoque SUVs under the Rs 30-35 lakh bracket. The Sierra name itself carries decades of emotional value, and adding AWD gives Tata the opportunity to re-establish its go-anywhere SUV credentials.

Verdict

With the Sierra EV set for a 2026 debut and the ICE Sierra AWD arriving in 2027, Tata Motors is carefully broadening the Sierra badge into a complete lifestyle SUV portfolio. The EV caters to future-ready urban and touring customers with the option of RWD or AWD, while the ICE AWD variant brings back the ruggedness that older Tata fans fondly remember. Together, they position the Sierra as a unique bridge between nostalgia and electrified modernity however, the road ahead would not be so easy with more and more players pouring into the exact same category.
