Maruti Suzuki WagonR

The WagonR gets a bad rap from online commenters and those who never get enough of the Uber OTP jokes. However, the fact is that the WagonR still continues to be one of the most sensible options for a first-time car buyer; it is more spacious than other hatchbacks in a similar price range, the AMT makes it super easy to drive, and the huge service network backing it up helps things further as well.

Maruti Suzuki recently upgraded the entire Arena lineup with six airbags, which also includes the WagonR. For an on-road (Delhi) price of Rs 7.99 lakh, the WagonR ZXi+ variant comes with the bigger 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. In terms of features, it gets the 7-inch touch screen infotainment system with Android Auto And Apple CarPlay, a four-speaker sound system, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, and power-adjustable mirrors among other things.
Nissan Magnite

The Magnite is soon set to be joined by two other cars in Nissan's lineup, but there is no denying that it comes across as a tempting first option for first-time buyers. Having received an upgrade not long ago, the Magnite offers a good mix of space, features and practicality. Not to forget, it is a rather easy car to drive even for first-time buyers, with a light steering wheel, good visibility, and ease of driving.
The N-Connecta variant can be had for an on-road (Delhi) price of Rs 9.20 lakh. This is with the 1.0-litre nat-asp petrol powertrain, paired to a 5-speed gearbox. While some may find its performance underwhelming, this setup works just fine for daily driving, provided that you're not expecting too much from it.

The N-Connecta comes with all-black interior upholstery, and some other features on offer include the new 7-inch digital instrument cluster with a dark theme, along with an Arkamys 3D sound system with 4 speakers and 2 tweeters, bezel-less auto-dimming IRVM, proximity lock/unlock, front centre armrest with storage, rear USB type-C charging ports, push-button start/stop, an 8-inch infotainment touch screen with wireless smartphone connectivity and voice recognition, and a reverse parking camera among other things.
Hyundai Exter

The Exter is Hyundai's answer to the Tata Punch, and it is based on the Grand i10 Nios. Buyers in this segment have an option that nearly covers all bases. Sure, the design may not be up to everyone's taste, but the Exter gets the job done otherwise, offering space, practicality, driving ease, an extensive features list and a good service network.

Hyundai recently added two new variants to the Exter; the S Smart and the SX Smart, which can be had from Rs 7.68 lakh and Rs 8.16 lakh onwards respectively (ex-showroom). The S Smart comes packing with features such as an electric sunroof, a tyre pressure monitoring system, rear A/C vents, and 15-inch steel wheels with covers. The SX Smart adds on a smart key system with push-button start, a shark-fin antenna, and projector headlamps. Both variants also get a 9-inch touch screen infotainment system with wireless smartphone connectivity and a rear parking camera, as optional add-on features for a price of Rs 14,999.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire

You're probably looking at the Dzire if you are someone who just cannot stand the horde of SUVs dominating the market, and who would rather be seen in something different. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire might once again be the butt of many cabbie jokes, but honestly it does whatever you ask of it without any hassle. It comes with an efficient powertrain, a good equipment list, and the ride quality is easily the nicest among all the other cars in this list.

For an ex-shiwroom price of Rs 8.34 lakh, the Dzire VXi AMT offers plenty of features, such as a 7-inch touch screen infotainment system with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, voice assistant, a 4-speaker sound system, OTA updates, rear A/C vents, auto-fold ORVMs, fast charging USB ports, gear position indicator, and hill-hold assist. The Dzire was among the list of cars to receive 6 airbags as standard, and it also made quite the waves by becoming the first Maruti car to score five-stars at the GNCAP.
Verdict
These are among the top four cars that we think would make the most sense if you are a first-time car buyer. Each of these cars has its set of strengths that make them good, especially for first-time buyers who want the maximum while sticking to a budget.
