Should I buy the Tiago CNG?
TATA TIAGO I-CNG is a great hatchback for the city and highway commutes. It has all the essential features, along with good comfort and exceptional safety, thanks to its strong build quality. Also, it has a first-in-its-segment dual-cylinder tech. This tech allows for a large boot to store your luggage. If you are still unsure about the Tiago I-CNG, you can consider checking out the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG or the Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG.
- The design of the Tiago i-CNG is identical to the regular version. You can hardly find any difference at first glance. Considering the projector setup for the headlamps, it has halogen units and provides good illumination at night.
- From the side, it comes with 14” hyperstyle alloy wheels which have a different design as compared to the regular version. The subtle line of chrome on the door handle gives a premium appearance.
- Coming to the rear, it has typically the same elements. But the main difference is the boot space and accommodation of the dual-cylinder. The dual-cylinder technology has increased the boot space. It has made it comfortable to store luggage. This was an issue in CNG vehicles.
- As we step inside the cabin of the Tiago I-CNG, they are almost identical to the regular version. The fit-finish quality of the cabin is decent and a lot of hard plastics are present inside the cabin.
- The cabin is practically laid out with plenty of cup holders, and bottle holders. It has cool features like a height-adjustable driver seat, cruise control, and automatic climate control. It also has a cooled glove box. These features make it a better value than its rivals.
- The 8” Harman infotainment touchscreen provides wired connectivity. It works for Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The audio output from the speakers is decent and the cabin does vibrate a bit due to the 3-cylinder engine.
- The Tiago i-CNG comes equipped with the same engine as the Tigor i-CNG. The performance figures and driveability are almost the same.
- It is a 3-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 74 BHP with 95 Nm of peak torque. This engine has some vibrations that are prominent in the cabin when the vehicle is in the ideal stage.
- The 5-speed manual transmission is slick in shifts and the clutch is also light with decent travel. What is new on its sleeves is the AMT gearbox on offer, which makes it the first car in India to come with an AMT gearbox.
- Now the main part, the fuel efficiency, would return about 22-23 km/kg depending on your driving style.
- The seating comfort of the Tiago I-CNG is decent. The seats offer good comfort with plush leather seats on offer.
- There is ample knee room, leg room, and headroom for the passengers at the rear. It can accommodate up to 3 passengers at the rear but it would be a tight fit.
- Talking about the feel and feedback of the steering wheel, it is light and easy to maneuver in city conditions. It provides good feedback from the tires. On triple-digit speeds, it weighs up decently and some vagueness can be felt.
Pricing for the Tiago CNG starts from Rs 6.30 lakh for the base XE version and goes as high as Rs 7.82 lakh for the XZ+ DT version. Tata Tiago iCNG directly competes with the Maruti Celerio CNG, Maruti Swift CNG and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG. It scores four stars in the Global NCAP rating, gets multiple variants for the CNG option however, it misses out on the stage of being the most fuel-efficient CNG car. The ARAI-certified fuel economy of Tiago iCNG sticks to 26.49 km/kg only when compared to 35.6 km/kg of Maruti Celerio and 28 km/kg of Grand i10 Nios. The Swift CNG delivers 30.9 km/kg.
If you are in the market to buy a budgeted CNG hatchback that also provides safety then Tata Tiago iCNG can be your choice. It delivers a good amount of power, is smooth to drive at city and highway speeds, and has a good suspension setup and has adequate features to offer.
Summary
The CNG hatchback market is warming up now. Tigor remains on the recommended list.
