Triumph Speed 400
Triumph Speed 400 is the brand's most affordable roadster bike in India. It is based on the design of the bigger Speed roadster bikes but offers a smaller engine with a similar level of fit and finish quality. Speed 400's torquey engine performance, combined with its ease of riding, makes it a strong contender in its segment. It also has the latest safety tech to enhance the riding experience.
Triumph Speed 400 Latest Update
Last Updated on 5th Apr'25: The Triumph Speed 400 received subtle updates for the Model Year 2025, but a key change to a pitch-black exhaust finish instead of the previously admired brushed aluminum caused concern among enthusiasts. Responding to strong customer demand, Triumph has now confirmed that the Speed 400 will continue to be offered with the brushed aluminum exhaust finish.
Triumph Speed 400 was updated for the MY2025 model and while it brought subtle changes with it, there was something nagging the enthusiasts, which was a big part of the charm of this motorcycle. It was the exhaust that lost its aluminum finish and came with a pitch-black one. However, after much demand from the customers, the brand confirmed that the bike will continue to offer brushed aluminum exhaust.

Should I buy the Speed 400?
Triumph Speed 400 is a comfortable city roadster bike. It is also the most affordable Triumph bike on sale in India. The Speed 400 is based on the design of the bigger Speed Twin bikes. It has solid build quality, superb fit, and great finish. The 400cc liquid-cooled engine is smooth to ride. The comfy riding position gives a relaxed experience on long rides. However, it lacks modern features like a TFT console and Bluetooth connectivity. Also, mid-range vibrations from the engine make it a bit irritating to ride hard. We recommend it to customers who want a relaxed, comfortable, fast roadster bike.
- The Speed 400 is based on the larger Speed Twin. That's why it has retro-roadster styling elements. These include a round headlight, flat handlebar, and sculpted fuel tank. The bike is smaller than its rivals. But it is well-proportioned, making it visually appealing. The build quality is superb and the fit & finish is typical Triumph.
- Offered with a single seat, Speed 400's comfort is one of the best in its segment. The seat is very well cushioned, while the rider triangle is set for easy riding on city roads or highways. You can remain comfortable even after riding it for more than 400 km.

- The 399cc, liquid-cooled engine of the Speed 400 is the best bit about it. The low-end torque of this engine is very helpful for city riding. The bike comes with a powerband as low as 2,000 rpm. Also, the mid-range performance of around 4,000 - 7,000 rpm is superb for fast highway riding. It can easily cruise around 90-110 kmph on the highways all day long. Although, there is a bit of heating that you can feel on your legs inside the city. However, on the go, the bike feels cool and powerful to ride.
- When the engine is running around 6,000-7,000 rpm, the footpegs and handlebars feel mild vibrations. The buzz can be irritating, especially while touring. It's not bad, but one would want a smoother powerband in this range.
- The bike's ARAI-claimed fuel economy is around 29 kmpl. In our test, however, it returned around 28 kmpl with hard riding around the ghats and within the city.
- Triumph has equipped the bike with USD forks at the front and a preload-adjustable rear monoshock. The ride quality of Speed 400 is very comfortable. The suspension absorbs almost every bump and crack of the road. On a very sharp pothole, you realize some hardness from the front. Overall, it is a very comfortable bike to ride and there's hardly anything to complain about the ride quality.
- The bike has a flat, tilted handlebar. It's tilted towards the rider. The footpegs are relaxed. The bike's handling is very neutral and predictable. The centre of weight lies underneath the rider, and hence, the agility of it is good within the city limits. Also, the heavy engine and good weight balance on the highway help with stability.
- The braking performance of the Speed 400 is among the best in its segment. The 300mm front disc and the 230mm rear disc brake offer a very strong bite. Also, the brakes remain intact even after riding it for long durations. Additionally, the calibration of the braking lever with the brake input is very good. New riders will feel confident while riding it faster.
- In terms of safety, it comes with dual-channel ABS as standard and traction control. The switchable rear ABS helps to have fun in a closed environment, and the traction control works very well on loose surfaces.
- The Speed 400 is not a very rich bike in terms of features. While it gets LED lights and alloy wheels, the semi-digital instrument console looks outdated. It is inspired by the bigger Speed Twin bikes, and hence, a small LCD screen acts as MID. The overall appeal of this console lacks lustre.
- There is a USB phone charger on the side of the instrument console, which may help riders charge their phones. However, you'll have to mount a phone holder for it.
