Triumph To Launch Smaller 350cc Bikes Soon- GST 2.0 Effect

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Triumph working on smaller 350cc engine
  • Likely to replace the 400cc series
  • Comes after the increased GST taxes on bikes above 350cc

Triumph India, in association with Bajaj motorcycles, will be developing a new 350cc engine for its new line-up that will be up for launch in the coming months. This comes after the Government's decision to increase the GST on bikes above 350cc to a 40% tax slab, making them more expensive than before. This puts more strain on the Triumph range as its portfolio in India starts from 400cc onwards. Triumph In The Development Of A 350cc Engine For New Range

Triumph Motorcycles, in partnership with Bajaj Auto, is preparing to step into the highly competitive 350cc category. Industry chatter suggests that the first motorcycles from this platform could debut in India within the next six to eight months, possibly by March next year. The move comes at a time when revised GST norms have made sub-350cc motorcycles more attractive in terms of pricing, prompting manufacturers to rethink their product strategies.

Until now, Triumph's India portfolio has relied entirely on motorcycles displacing more than 350cc, leaving it exposed to the recent tax changes. Rajiv Bajaj has already hinted that Bajaj Auto will rework much of its portfolio to sit under the 350cc ceiling, and Triumph appears to be among the brands most directly affected. By entering this displacement band, Triumph aims to safeguard its volumes while keeping its motorcycles accessible to a wider audience.

The upcoming 350cc engine is not an all-new motor but a reworked version of the 400cc single currently powering Triumph's India-built range. The likely approach is to shorten the bore while retaining the stroke, effectively bringing displacement down to just under 350cc. While this would naturally bring down peak power, the altered engine geometry should improve low- and mid-range torque delivery, a trait that suits city riding and relaxed cruising.

What to Expect From the Lineup

The 350cc platform will likely form the base for a new family of Triumph models, expected to include the Speed 350, Scrambler 350, and the upcoming T4. These models will be built in India for local buyers, but the 400cc lineup may possibly be laid to rest for the Indian market, as it would make no sense once the smaller capacity bikes come in.

Currently, Triumph's 400 series enjoys strong sales momentum, averaging around 3,500 units a month. However, the revised GST structure makes them less price-competitive, eroding their advantage against rivals like Royal Enfield. The new 350cc range could help Triumph reclaim that positioning, offering competitive pricing while maintaining the brand's signature premium feel.

Verdict

Triumph's pivot to the 350cc category isn't just about displacement, but about adapting to India's regulatory landscape while staying relevant in a fiercely contested market. By slightly reducing engine size and fine-tuning its performance characteristics, Triumph looks set to offer motorcycles that blend accessibility with brand identity. But how will it ride and what will be the fate of the 400cc bikes currently in portfolio, remains to be seen after this new engine laden bike hits the showroom.
