Bajaj Pulsar N160 4V vs Hero Xtreme 160R 4V: Which 160cc Streetfighter Should You Buy?

Bajaj Pulsar N160 4V vs Hero Xtreme 160R 4V: Which 160cc Streetfighter Should You Buy?

Bajaj has recently added a new range to the Pulsar lineup, the N160 S and N160 SS, priced from Rs 1.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). With this launch, the brand has addressed a genuine ask in this segment: more tech, and it delivers with a new 165cc four-valve engine at what is still an aggressive price point. This segment has always been fiercely competitive, with every manufacturer trying to grow its presence here, and that puts Hero's Xtreme 160R 4V into direct rivalry with the N160. Hero's flagship variant, sitting at Rs 1.34 lakh (ex-showroom) with cruise control and ride-by-wire, isn't backing down either. I've spent quite a good time riding the N160 in city, highway stretches and traffic situation, so this isn't a spec-sheet comparison alone. Let's have a closer look at these two popular rivals and see what each one actually offers at its price.

Design and Road Presence

Pulsar Vs Xtreme

The Pulsar N160 carries forward that unmistakable muscular streetfighter stance the nameplate is known for, sharp bodywork, a bi-functional LED projector headlamp, LED position lamps, and sporty coloured alloy wheels. Having ridden it i can say it has a strong road presence especially the new colour with those alloy wheels finished in red. The top-spec N160 SS adds a split seat and a radial rear tyre, which sharpens the look further and isn't just a cosmetic upgrade.

On the other hand Xtreme 160R 4V also brings a different kind of aggression. Hero has aimed the design toward a sharper, more angular face for the 2026 update, borrowing LED headlamp styling from its bigger sibling Xtreme 250R. It's a handsome bike in its own right, but if we put it next to the N160 it feels a bit smaller in size and is less dominant on the road. However, design is a subjective thing but the N160 wins this round without much argument. If you want something sharper and slightly less bulky to throw around in traffic, the Xtreme makes a reasonable case.

Engine, Performance and Mileage

Pulsar Vs Xtreme

Now this is where things get genuinely interesting. Both motorcycles run a 4-valve setup, and thanks to Bajaj's recent update, the Pulsar N160 has finally joined that party too. That said, the Pulsar N160’s 164.9cc, oiled cooled engine produces 18.5 PS and 14.4 Nm of torque, which officially makes it the most powerful 160cc engine in the segment, and Bajaj claims a 0-60 kmph time of just 4.5 seconds.

Pulsar Vs Xtreme

The engine performance is linear, predictable and smooth for a 160cc engine it does the job well. Moreover, the 4V motor pulls harder through the mid-range and revs out with far less strain, which matters if you actually use a 160 for spirited weekend rides and not just commuting.

Pulsar Vs Xtreme

The Xtreme 160R 4V sticks with its familiar 163.2cc air-oil cooled engine, making 16.6 to 16.9 PS and 14.6 Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed gearbox. In terms of refinement the engine has a very smooth and refined nature, Hero has always tuned this engine well, but on paper it's simply down on power against the N160's newer motor. Where the Xtreme claws some ground back is mileage. Both claim similar ARAI figures, Xtreme around 46-48 kmpl, N160 4V around 47-51 kmpl, so it's close on paper. In my experience though, the N160 edges ahead in real-world riding once you ease off the throttle.

Pulsar N160 Vs Xtreme 160R: Features

Pulsar Vs Xtreme

On the feature front both the manufacturers have loaded these bikes with plenty of useful tech, but the way they've split it across variants tells you a lot about each brand's approach.

The N160 S and SS both get ride-by-wire, four riding modes (Road, Sport, Rain, Off-Road), and Bajaj's Crawl Tech, which lets you creep through traffic without babysitting the clutch. The N160 SS goes further with traction control, a 5-inch TFT display with Google Maps mirroring built in, dual-channel ABS, and adjustable levers.

Meanwhile the Xtreme 160R 4V counters with cruise control a segment-first feature at this price point, along with three riding modes (Rain, Road, Sport) and a new colour LCD borrowed from the Xtreme 250R. Though it misses out a few features like traction control or a TFT display. So in term of features Bajaj N160 edges over Xtreme 160R.

Dimensions and Ergonomics

Pulsar Vs Xtreme

The N160 4V comes in at a kerb weight of around 151 kg with a 795mm seat height and a 1358mm wheelbase, while the Xtreme 160R 4V is lighter at roughly 144 to 145 kg. That weight difference is noticeable the moment you flick the Xtreme through traffic, it feels a touch more agile at low speeds, though the N160 doesn't feel heavy or cumbersome by any stretch once you're moving.

Moreover, the Bajaj N160 handles few cornering very well. It gives you confidence while you lean it at a higher speed as well. Bajaj N160 carries a 14-litre fuel tank while the Xtreme 160 has a 12-litre fuel tank which gives N160 a slight edge on tank range assuming similar mileage.

Our Verdict

Both motorcycles bring strong credentials to the 160cc streetfighter segment, but they appeal to slightly different buyers. The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V stands out with its lighter weight, refined engine, and segment-first cruise control, making it a compelling option for riders who prioritise ease of use and daily commuting comfort.

However, the Bajaj Pulsar N160 4V feels like the more rounded package overall. Its stronger performance, larger fuel tank, feature-rich electronics suite, and confidence-inspiring handling give it an edge in both city riding and weekend highway runs. Features such as traction control, a TFT display with navigation support, multiple riding modes, and Crawl Tech further strengthen its value proposition.

If your priority is a lightweight and easy-to-manage motorcycle, the Xtreme 160R 4V remains a solid choice. But for buyers seeking a motorcycle that blends performance, technology, practicality, and long-distance capability into one package, the Pulsar N160 4V emerges as the more complete and future-ready option in this comparison.
