Harley-Davidson X440 - Can It Beat Royal Enfield?

The upcoming Harley bike will be the most-affordable offering from the company in India. Additionally, it'll make its global debut from India. As visible in the photos, it is a roadster bike with an upright riding posture. Harley and Hero have jointly developed this motorcycle. It'll feature a neo-retro design with round headlight, round indicators, & round mirrors. However, the modern bits like LED projector lights, LED indicators, etc., will also be offered on it. The design looks subtle and most of the components are black painted. Features will include a single-pod digital instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity for smartphone.

Harley has specifically developed the new engine for the domestic market. It'll be powered via a 440cc single-cylinder air/oil-cooled engine. The power figures of it are yet unknown but we suspect that it'll generate 35 bhp or more. However, Harley fans will miss the V-Twin setup on this one. Meanwhile, a 6-speed transmission and a slipper-assist clutch shall be offered along. The front suspension include of a USD unit while the rear will get dual shockers. Braking will be done by disc setup at both ends; indicating that dual-channel ABS will also be a standard offering.

Its rivals will be the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 & KTM 390 Duke. However, the 650 gets a bigger engine and hence the upcoming RE Scram 450 can be considered its direct rival. In the present, RE has a dominancy in the 250-500cc segment of bikes. Harley is aiming to break this monopoly by the upcoming X440.

Verdict

As the X440 will be developed and manufactured with the support of Hero; its pricing will be interesting. We anticipate that it'll be priced somewhere around Rs 3 lakh mark. In fact, its new rival i.e. Bajaj-Triumph Scrambler will also launch in the debut week of X440. The X440 is scheduled for India launch on 3 July.
