The 10 Lakh Rupee Question: Hatchback, Sedan or SUV?

With over a hundred different models on sale in India, making a new car purchase decision is often a game that you end up playing for months. And while doing so, the first thing we set right in our mind is our budget. This usually various around a number that is common for most. First-time buyers looking at a small car keep this as Rs 5 lakh whereas those in the market for a bigger vehicle have it capped at Rs 10 lakh. This article is for the ones who fall into the second category. So what is the kind of car you should be looking at under Rs 10 lakh?

best car type in Rs 10 lakh

There is no dearth of options in the car market. Infact, various car segments in terms of body types end up overlapping each other when it comes their prices. This also creates confusion in the mind of prospective buyers. However, this is exactly why we came up with this article in the first place. Without further ado then, let's get going:

A hatchback under Rs 10 lakh?

This opens up a rather long list of cars you can own. However, we are assuming you are looking at something that feels premium, has ample features and looks good too. This is where premium hatchbacks come into the picture. Tata's first premium hatchback, the Altroz will be here soon and the diesel one is our pick. It will be under Rs 10 lakh and looks bling.

For those looking at a performance automatic, the Polo GT TSI makes sense - yes, massive discounts keep it well under Rs 10 lakh, on-road. If you want a no-nonsense city roundabout, look no further than the Maruti, err, Nexa Baleno CVT. All these options, save for the Polo, offer ample space for both 5 adults and their luggage for a weekend trip to the hills

A sedan under Rs 10 lakh?

Yes, why not. A three-box design or a car with a boot always has higher street cred for most. Entry level sedans are what you should be looking at. The Honda Amaze for example ticks all the right boxes and is the only offering among its rivals to offer a CVT auto 'box, not only with the petrol but diesel too.

If you seek an even bigger sedan and wants oodles of space, the Ciaz fits the bill. This Nexa offering has huge discounts for Jan 2020. But do remember, most sedans, with a load full of passengers and luggage, aren't the best for bad roads. They are prone to underbelly damages.

An SUV under Rs 10 lakh?

Now we are talking! This is the fastest-growing segment in India and though these SUVs can't match most sedans we spoke above about in terms of cabin space, they do offer something that easily massages your ego - size and stance! Urban dwellers can pick the modern Hyundai Venue, those looking at size can have the Renault Duster and if you want safety in check, the Nexon should be your next car.

But if you can hold on for a while, Maruti will be upgrading the Brezza with a facelift and a new petrol motor. Likewise, Tata will offer the refreshed Nexon later this month. Do note, however, unlike hatchbacks and sedans, discounts on SUVs isn't that high.

Pros and Cons:

A premium hatchback ends up being affordable but at the price of size. But its easier to manage it in traffic on a daily basis. A sedan ups your social status, has a usable boot and in some cases, offers a better transmission option. A compact SUV, on the other hand, comes handy with a higher clearance, offers better visibility and makes you feel in control on the road. Okay, ignore the last attribute!

Buy now or wait

January is the best time to buy a new car if you don't want to wait for upgrades or all-new models coming a few months down the line. Dealers usually have the old stock (manufactured in the previous year) on hand and in order to get rid of it, end up increasing discounts and freebies. This year especially, due to upcoming BS-6 norms, the current stock of BS-4 cars needs to be sold before 31st March 2020. So go ahead, negotiate hard and get that dream car home.
