Negative Points On Driving License In Consideration

Driving License

To curb traffic violations, India's road transport ministry is set to implement a negative points system for Driving Licence (DLs). This system will track offenses like speeding and signal violations, and accumulation of a specified number of negative points may lead to DL suspension or even cancellation. This measure comes in response to the ineffectiveness of previous efforts, such as substantial fines, in reducing traffic accidents and violations. With India reporting over 170,000 accidents annually, authorities believe that a more stringent approach is necessary. The negative points system will be used in conjunction with existing penalties for traffic infractions.

In addition, the government is reportedly evaluating a proposal to make driving tests mandatory for repeat traffic offenders when they seek to renew their driver's license. Also, last month, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had hinted at the rollout of new initiatives aimed at curbing road accidents and enforcing stricter compliance with traffic laws.

As per reports, the government is considering amending the Motor Vehicles Act in the coming months to introduce a point-based system aimed at improving driver accountability. Sources indicate that this system may include both demerit points for traffic violations and merit points for responsible driving and acts of public goodwill, such as helping accident victims. This balanced approach is being explored to not only penalize poor driving but also to encourage and recognize good road behaviour.

Verdict

The proposed move is a part of series of actions being taken to ensure that road fatalities can be curbed, something that has been on the agenda of the Ministry as per the announcements on several occassions. When introduced, it will make people more careful as when this gets enforced, its not just fines, but suspension of DLs is very much a possiblity.
