Royal Enfield Himalayan Electric: Off-Road Testing in Full Swing

The Himalayan has long been regarded as Royal Enfield's breakthrough into the adventure segment, balancing rugged touring ability with everyday practicality. That same ethos is now being translated into the EV era. Recent spy shots reveal Himalayan Electric test bikes stopping for top-ups at conventional charging stations as well as mobile units powered by diesel generators housed in Force Traveller vans. The sight of multiple mules charging simultaneously suggests a large-scale testing program towards Ladakh, the land of high passes, which is also Himalayan's natural habitat.

One of the key takeaways from these sightings is the Himalayan Electric's twin-battery design. Early prototypes appear to use two removable packs, which could be carried indoors for home charging or swapped in remote locations. This feature makes practical sense for touring riders, especially when recharging at fixed infrastructure isn't always possible. Another highlight is the left side-mounted charging mount, which is clearly visible in the images.

Retaining The Himalayan DNA

Despite its futuristic powertrain, the Him-e doesn't abandon the rugged silhouette of the petrol-powered Himalayan. The upright stance, tall windscreen, wire-spoked wheels shod with off-road tyres, and long-travel suspension remain intact. Test bikes also feature premium components such as USD front forks, a larger digital display with navigation support, and multiple riding modes including Off-Road, Tour, and Rally. These elements mark a leap forward in technology, making this the most advanced Royal Enfield yet.

Global Test Program In Action

Royal Enfield is clearly treating the Himalayan Electric as a global product. A recent invite-only test ride curated by Shimla-based Xplorearth included big international names like American supercross legend Ricky Johnson and former MotoGP/WSBK champion Carlos Checa. Their involvement signals that Royal Enfield is seeking expert-level feedback to fine-tune performance for diverse markets worldwide.

Powertrain & Performance

While official specifications remain under wraps, industry whispers point toward a 14 kWh battery mated to a 74.5 kW (100 hp) motor, numbers that would make it the most powerful Royal Enfield to date. Early impressions suggest a top speed of around 120 km/h, with a riding range of 200-250 km depending on terrain and mode. If these figures hold true, the Him-e could stand toe-to-toe with established global adventure EVs.

The Himalayan Electric is tipped to make its global premiere at EICMA 2025 on November 4, with market launch expected by late 2026. Positioned as a premium offering, pricing could hover around Rs. 5 lakh (ex-showroom), placing it above most of Royal Enfield's current ICE portfolio.
