2022 Honda Benly e Electric Scooter Spied On Test - India Launch Soon?

Honda is testing a new small electric scooter in India. The recent spy shots of the 2022 Honda Benly e confirm that the e-scooter is under final rounds of testing. It was introduced back in 2019 at the Tokyo Motor Show. However, the lack of EV infra in India has pushed back the big manufacturers like Honda. With growing EV competition, Honda seems to be interested in launching this small e-scooter in India soon. Read its complete details below.

2022 Honda Benly e Details

Speaking of the Benly e, it is mainly designed for delivery services & cargo ferrying. It has a radical design when compared to regular e-scooters like Ola S1 or the Ather 450X. However, this radical design is to support its utility factor. The front of the e-scooter has been fitted with a big parcel carrier above the headlight unit. Additionally, its footboard area has been carved in a way to do luggage on the go easily. A small yet cushioned rider seat is provided for easy access. Meanwhile, the rear also uses a big flat loading area with swappable luggage mounts. This means that it shall also come with multiple cargo box options.

However, the other design elements on it are rather conventional. Round rear-view mirrors, a round digital instrument cluster, a round headlight, etc. make up for a conventional design. the rear uses the electric motor combination fitted aside from the tyre. Honda Benly is available in two variants globally. The Benly 'e I' is what we see in the spy pics. It comes with a 2.8kW electric motor which makes a peak power of 3.8 bhp & 13 Nm of peak torque. This variant is claimed to do 43 km per charge in ECO mode with 30 kmph of limited speed.

However, the second variant 'e II' gets a bigger 4.2kW electric motor. It makes a peak power of 5.7 bhp & 15 Nm of peak torque. This variant can do a claimed range of up to 87 km per charge at 30 kmph on a flat surface. However, if sped up to 60 kmph the range can drop significantly up to 60 km per charge. Hence, it comes with swappable battery technology. Additionally, Honda is setting up new battery-swapping stations in India in a JV with HPCL.

Verdict

The spied e-scooter seems to be in its final rounds of testing. However, it will only be meant for B2B consumers & services like cargo delivery; when launched. For now, no claims can be made on its India debut time. However, it won't be surprising if Honda debuts or launches it at the upcoming Indian Auto Expo in January.
