Cheapest Scooters with ABS - Vespa and Aprilia Models

Update - If we talk about scooters, we have a lot of options that offer adequate performance and great mileage. But if you want performance and safety, do we have many options? Yes, not many but we have three scooters that offer great performance and ABS as standard. Let's see the cheapest scooters in India with ABS and what they offer.

Aprilia SR 160

Aprilia SR 160 is very popular among buyers for its exhilarating performance and great handling. Aprilia used to offer 150cc SR before but now that has been replaced with a 160cc engine. Thanks to the new motor vehicle norms which mandatories ABS for any two-wheeler having displacement above 125cc, this scooter now comes with Anti-Lock braking system.

The SR 160 is powered by a 160cc single-cylinder fuel-injected engine which churns out 11 PS, a decrease of 0.94 PS compared to BS4 counterpart. Aprilia SR 160 ABS is priced from Rs 1.05 lakh and goes to Rs 1.14 lakh ex-showroom, New Delhi.

Vespa VXL 150

All the three scooters we have mentioned here are from the Piaggio group as Piaggio is the only brand in India to offer ABS with scooters. The Vespa VXL 150 is a city commuter scooter which offers good comfort and performance. Vespa introduced single-channel ABS in the VXL way back in 2018 which is commendable and there was no safety norm for the above in 2018.

Talking about the powerhouse, it is a 154cc single-cylinder fuel-injected engine which churns out 11.5 PS and 11 Nm of peak torque mated to a CVT box. Vespa VXL also features some connected features like scooter details, last-parked location, service history, panic alert and emergency aids as well. It is fairly equipped too, gets LED headlight, telescopic forks and many more features. The Vespa VXL 150 is priced at Rs 1.22 lakh ex-showroom, New Delhi.

Vespa Elegante 150

Vespa Elegante 150 is similar to the VXL 150 but it has been given a retro styling. The design is said to be elegant and conventional and it is expensive than the VXL 150. To support the retro theme, the Elegante 150 gets front visor, split seats, loads of chrome everywhere and smooth flowing body lines.

Powering the Elegante is a 154cc single-cylinder fuel-injected engine, which we also see in the VXl, churning out 11.5 PS and 11 Nm of torque mated to a CVT box. We get a front disc with ABS and drum brakes at the rear. The Elegante is offered in two colours: Beige Unico and Pearl White. Vespa Elegante is priced at Rs 1.33 lakh which is around Rs 10,000 dearer than the VXl 150.

So these are all the cheapest scooters with ABS we have in India. Obviously, these can't be called 'cheap' thanks to their premium price tag. But the norms mandate ABS after 125cc and Indians prefer scooters below 125cc scooters and sporty scooters segment is at its nascent stage in India. It is really commendable that the Piaggio Group has been offering ABS with its scooters in India even before the norms came in.
