The Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric is the brand's new entry-level EV in India, with prices starting at Rs 55 lakh (ex-showroom) and two additional variants on offer. This sedan effectively replaces the EQA and reintroduces the CLA nameplate in India after a gap of six years. While it doesn't have a direct rival due to its sedan body style, its closest competitor comes in the form of an SUV - the BMW iX1 LWB, which has been one of BMW's best-selling models in recent times. Both models are similarly priced and stand out for their efficiency. Let's compare the two - and in the meantime, do join our 91Wheels Whatsapp Channel to stay updated with the latest automotive news.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric vs BMW iX1 LWB - Which German EV Is More Efficient?

Lets begin with the introduction - the new 2026 Mercedes CLA Electric is a new vehicle, built on an MMA platform with an 800-volt architecture. On the other hand, the iX1 LWB is an electric version of the BMW X1. So, one is a fully developed, built-from-scratch EV, while the latter is an extension or iteration of an existing car. Plus, the CLA, being a sedan with a drag coefficient of 0.21, puts it miles ahead in the efficiency game.

That said, despite a 0.26 Cd, the SUV nature of it will never be able to provide more efficiency - but it has its own positives, like more space on offer and ground clearance that allows drivers to tackle bad roads with more confidence.
Now, let's talk about their battery packs and range on offer:-
Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric
| Specifications | Unit | CLA 250+ 'Launch Edition' | CLA 250+ Long range | CLA 200 Standard Range |

| Top Speed | km/h | 210 | 210 | 210 |

BMW iX1 LWB
| Specifications | Unit | eDrive 20L |
| Power | Ps | 203 |
| Torque | Nm | 250 |
| Max DC Charging power | KW | 130 |
| Acceleration (0-100kmph) | Sec | 8.6 |

As mentioned earlier, the CLA Electric is a born EV, developed with a clear focus - delivering a driving range comparable to efficient diesel cars. Its claimed range of 792 km is exceptional, especially for a luxury sedan priced under Rs 1 crore. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, but this car is primarily about covering long distances in supreme comfort and with a high-class feel.

On the other hand, BMW has also engineered its car with efficiency in mind. The iX1 LWB offers a claimed range of 531 km, which is commendable, but it does fall short when compared to the Mercedes. That said, pricing plays a crucial role here - the iX1 LWB is priced at Rs 51.40 lakh (ex-showroom), while the CLA Electric starts at Rs 55 lakh, with the other two variants priced at Rs 59 lakh and Rs 64 lakh, respectively. These are introductory prices and are likely to change over time.

So yes, the three-pointed star brand clearly leads in terms of range and efficiency, but it comes at a higher price point.
Charging Speed
The BMW iX1 LWB features a 64.8 kWh battery pack and supports AC charging at up to 11 kW, taking approximately 6 hours and 45 minutes for a full 0-100% charge. On the DC front, it supports a maximum charging capacity of 130 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in around 32 minutes. In comparison, the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric offers significantly higher DC charging capability, with up to 320 kW (CLA 250+) and an 800-volt architecture, allowing it to add up to 400 km of range in just 20 minutes.

While the BMW's charging figures are competitive and practical for everyday use, the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric demonstrates a clear advantage in fast-charging performance and overall charging technology.
So, out and out - if you want to save money and want an extremely efficient luxury - out of these only CLA Electric is the right option, and fair to say that its the new electric king.
Dimensions
| Dimensions | CLA Electric | iX1 LWB |
| Length | 4723 mm | 4616 m |
| Width | 1855 mm | 1845 mm |
| Height | 1468 mm | 1627 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2790 mm | 2800 mm |
| Boot Capacity | 405 L | 490 L |
If looks matter, then choosing between the two isn't difficult, as India has become an SUV-first country and buyers are increasingly gravitating towards this body style. The CLA Electric looks aesthetic and classy from all angles, and the front end appears charismatic with the addition of 142 stars embedded in the grille. However, it does feel like the car is screaming for attention, and many people may prefer the more tastefully done BMW kidney grille with a mesh pattern.

Verdict
The BMW iX1 LWB has already proven its credentials in the market with a well-rounded package and strong buyer acceptance, making it the safer, more established choice in this space. On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric looks highly promising, with its striking design and growing booking momentum indicating strong initial interest. That said, we haven't even touched upon the feature set yet, which could further influence the final decision, as this piece was focused on the efficiency factor.
