Chery Tiggo 8: Exterior Design & Dimensions

The Indian patent reveals that the Chery Tiggo 8 looks nearly identical to its global counterpart. Up front, the SUV sports a bold octagonal grille flanked by sleek LED headlamps with integrated DRLs. Chrome accents, large 19-inch alloy wheels, flush door handles, and squared-off arches give it a premium stance, while the connected LED tail lamps and roof-mounted spoiler complete its modern look. Dimensionally, the Tiggo 8 measures 4,696 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,745 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,710 mm. The international version comes with a 5-seat configuration, but considering Indian buyer preferences, a 7-seater layout may also be possible.

The Tiggo 8 doesn't hold back on the premium kit, where it offers features like a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, 5400 panoramic camera system, 12-speaker audio setup, multi-colour ambient lighting, and 50W wireless fast charging. On the safety front, the Tiggo 8 boasts nine airbags, a built-in dashcam, and ADAS with 19 functions such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot detection. It has also scored a 4-star Euro NCAP rating, strengthening its credentials in a safety-conscious market like India. It remains to be seen if the same feature list is brought here to India, if and when the brand decides to do so.

Engine and Performance

Globally, the Tiggo 8 is offered with a 2.0-litre TGDI petrol engine producing 245 PS and 390 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and AWD system. With a claimed efficiency of 11.5 km/l abroad, the Tiggo 8 missing out on any diesel powertrain option with an SUV this big might be a challenge in the Indian market, where the big cars are still being preferred with a diesel, even after the strong regulations surrounding its fate.

While Chery has yet to reveal any India launch roadmap, the Tiggo 8, if introduced, could slot into the Rs 30 lakh segment, taking on rivals like the Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Meridian, Tata Harrier, and others.

Verdict

The patent filing of the Tiggo 8 signals Chery's growing interest in India at a time when relations between the nations are warming up and opening up to new avenues. With its bold design, powerful engine, long feature list, and strong safety package, the Tiggo 8 could emerge as a compelling new entry in the premium SUV space. While an official confirmation is awaited, its presence on the patent roster suggests that Chery might be gearing up for a serious play in India's fast-growing SUV market soon.
