The latest news on this topic comes from the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, where the police have proposed deducting fines directly from the FASTag accounts of vehicles caught above 100 kmph. The fine for speeding on this expressway is currently Rs. 1,000, and the police believe that deducting the fine directly from the account would be a more efficient and convenient way to collect fines.

However, this plan is still in the early stages, and the NHAI has been asked to look into the feasibility of it. If the plan is approved, it would mean that drivers would no longer have to pay fines in cash. Instead, the fines would be deducted automatically from their FASTag accounts.

According to a report by ToI, Alok Kumar, the Additional Director General of Police for road safety and traffic, has urged NHAI officials to evaluate the possibility of deducting fines from FASTag accounts and transferring the funds directly to the government. Currently, fines collected from FASTag accounts are funneled to NHAI. The proposed plan seeks to ensure that fines deducted are directly deposited into the government's account.

Verdict

It remains to be seen whether the plan to deduct speeding fines from FASTag accounts will be implemented. However, if it is, it could have a significant impact on road safety in India. By making it easier to pay fines, the government could help to deter speeding and reduce the number of accidents.
