  • Now you can get a Bharat (BH) Series registration plate for your old vehicles
  • The Bharat series of car registration was launched in September of last year
  • The BH series was developed to do away with the necessity of re-registering the car while relocating

New Bharat (BH) series vehicle registrations were launched by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in September of last year. The series was initially only available to the people with transferrable jobs. Now, existing vehicles with regular registration plates can request to have their plates converted to BH series plate, according to government announcement made on Friday.

According to the recent announcement vehicles currently having regular registration mark can also be converted to BH series registration mark, subject to payment of requisite tax, to facilitate persons who subsequently become eligible for BH series registration mark.

In order to further improve the citizen's ease of life, the ministry has also suggested amending rule 48 to allow flexibility in where applicants for the BH series may submit their applications - either at their place of residence or their place of employment. Additionally, it stated that the Working Certificate that employees of the private sector must present has been enhanced further to guard against abuse.

BH Plate

The Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH) first introduced the BH or Bharat series number plates last year as a method to spare government workers the trouble of re-registering their vehicles in the new state they have been relocated to. Later, its eligibility requirements were widened to cover new automobile owners who intended to move to another state in the not-too-distant future; as a result, people with registered cars now have the same accessibility.

You will only be required to pay road tax for the first two years after purchasing your car if you register it with a BH series number plate. You will then need to pay road tax every two years after that. The invoice value of the car excluding GST is used to determine the road tax for a BH series-registered vehicle rather than the ex-showroom price.

Verdict: Since the government declared the conversion of regular plate to BH plate, existing vehicle owners can avoid the difficulties associated with re-registering their vehicles while relocating to another state. Employees with transferrable jobs in the public, private, and PSU sectors will benefit from this.
