Two-Wheelers In India To Not Be Sold Without Two Helmets

In an effort to curb the rising toll of two-wheeler accidents, the Indian government has mandated that all new two-wheeler sales must include two ISI-certified helmets. Union Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari introduced this safety regulation at the Auto Summit in New Delhi, aiming to instill a safety-first mindset for both riders and passengers. The Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association (THMA), representing certified helmet producers, has voiced its strong approval, asserting that this measure can significantly reduce fatalities on Indian roads. THMA President Rajeev Kapur emphasized the regulation's importance, stating it addresses a long-neglected safety need and offers a measure of comfort to families who have experienced the loss of loved ones in such accidents, representing a proactive step towards preventing future tragedies.

These helmets must adhere to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) safety criteria, marked by the ISI certification, guaranteeing they meet stringent impact resistance, strap durability, and visibility requirements. This mandate designates one helmet for the rider and one for the passenger, recognizing the common practice of two-person occupancy on two-wheelers. By aligning with the updated BIS standards , which prioritize enhanced head protection, the government seeks to integrate helmet provision into the vehicle purchase itself, ensuring buyers are immediately equipped with essential safety gear.

Verdict

Road safety has been one of the key pointers in recent times when road accidents seem to be on the rise and in the news as well. The move to mandate the 2 helemt policy is a step further in cutting down casualty numbers on the roads. However, what happens if you already have helmets with you from prior purchases is something that needs to be more clear as well.
