Hyundai Bayon CNG Launch Expected by January 2027; Twin-cylinder Setup Confirmed
Hyundai has barely finished launching the Bayon, and it has already announced what comes next. The company has confirmed a factory-fitted CNG variant for January 2027. The Bayon currently starts at around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) and is sold only with a petrol engine. Adding a CNG option will further enhance flexibility and let buyers choose based on their daily running.

A First for Hyundai in this Segment
Hyundai has sold CNG cars before, but only in the entry segments: the Grand i10 Nios, Aura and Exter. The Bayon will be its first CNG offering in the midsize SUV space, where the Maruti Victoris, Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder have been collecting CNG buyers for a while. Hyundai had no answer to them until now.
What Powers It
The CNG variant will use the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine as the regular Bayon, which makes 115 PS and about 144 Nm. Hyundai hasn’t shared CNG figures, but a drop is normal when running on gas. Expect roughly 100 PS and 125 Nm. For reference, the Kia Carens Clavis CNG, which uses the same engine, makes 94.6 bhp and 123.2 Nm.
Transmission is expected to be a 6-speed manual only. The petrol Bayon also comes with an iVT automatic, but no CNG automatic has been mentioned.
Boot space and the twin-cylinder question
The Bayon’s 505-litre boot is among the largest in its class, so CNG tanks eating into it would have been a real worry. Hyundai has said the CNG variant will not compromise boot space.
The likely answer is the HY-CNG Duo layout from the Exter, which splits the gas across two smaller cylinders placed under the boot floor instead of one large tank. Hyundai hasn’t confirmed this for the Bayon. One report suggests a single 60-litre boot-mounted tank like the Clavis CNG, but that would conflict with Hyundai’s boot-space assurance.
Which variants, and how much more?
Hyundai hasn’t announced the CNG trim line-up. The petrol Bayon comes in seven trims (HX2, HX3, HX3+, HX5, HX6, HX8 and HX10). One report expects CNG on all but the top trim, but nothing is official. Expect a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the equivalent petrol variant. The petrol range currently runs from roughly Rs 10 lakh to Rs 18 lakh.
The Mileage benchmark
Hyundai hasn’t shared a mileage claim. The target is the Maruti Victoris CNG, rated at 27.02 km/kg, with the Grand Vitara and Hyryder CNG close behind. Those rivals make about 87.8 PS and 121.5 Nm on CNG and use a 5-speed manual. The Bayon’s extra gear and slightly higher power could help it on both refinement and efficiency.

Why it matters
CNG has become the practical choice for people who drive a lot and watch running costs, much like diesel used to be for this kind of buyer. With one petrol engine at launch, the CNG option gives the Bayon a second reason to be on a shortlist. It also gives Hyundai a way to bring in buyers who would otherwise go straight to Maruti or Toyota.
