Classic car and two-wheeler owners in Uttar Pradesh can now breathe a sigh of relief. The state government is preparing a set of SOPs, which will allow vintage vehicle registration. This follows the rules regarding the registration of vintage vehicles in India, which were announced back in 2021.

Vintage Vehicle Registration In UP; Details
Even though vehicles need to be more than 50 years old from the first registration, vehicles will not fall under the vintage category automatically on the basis of their age. Owners of old cars and two-wheelers will need to apply for vintage registration at their local RTO/ARTO, where their condition will be assessed. The vehicles need to maintain the original components such as the engine, chassis, and body shell. The applications shall take a period of 60 days to process.
The fee for registration of a vintage vehicle will be set at Rs 20,000. The RC for a vintage vehicle will stay valid for 10 years, following which it can be renewed for a fee of Rs 5000, and then it will stay valid for another 5 years. Basically, every five years you will be able to re-register your vintage vehicle. Current pending applications will be treated on a priority basis, and further details will follow once the final set of SOPs are shared.
Vintage vehicles will be exempt from the HSRP (High Security Registration Plate) requirements. Instead, these vehicles will bear a special number plate bearing the series 'UP VA YY XXXX'. It is important to note that only private cars and two-wheelers will qualify for registration under the vintage category. Commercial vehicles will not fall under this category; basically all the older trucks, buses and three-wheelers that are seen plying on roads ever so often.
Verdict
With the state of UP being among the largest in terms of population, it is also home to a large number of old cars and two-wheelers, which will finally get their due respect and preservation under the new rules for vintage registration set to be implemented soon.
