International variant of the upcoming Tayron

Like Skoda has the Kodiaq, VW India will soon have the Tayron. Both SUVs share the same MQB EVO platform and engine - a 2.0L TSI petrol unit paired with an AWD system. This setup is similar to what we've seen in the Tiguan R-Line, and yes, the Tayron is essentially an extended version of it. Both the front and rear profiles look quite alike, with only subtle differences noticeable upon closer inspection, as this is wider and longer car, with 3 comfortable rows. That said, we can expect it to have a slightly stiffer suspension and be a more engaging car to drive, in line with Volkswagen's driving reputation.

Talking more about this vehicle, the Tayron has been tested in the Euro NCAP crash tests and has scored a perfect 5 stars. Additionally, it received 87% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupant protection. It also scored 83% for vulnerable road users and 85% in the safety assist category. Now, why is this information crucial for Indians? Because, like the Kodiaq, this car will be brought here via the CBU route - meaning it will be fully manufactured abroad and imported to India.

This indicates that the SUV could be priced in the range of Rs 45-48 lakh (ex-showroom) in India, placing it directly against the Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster, and adding another strong competitor to the segment.

Verdict

The Volkswagen Tayron enters a highly competitive and loyalty-driven segment with strong fundamentals, including premium build quality, modern features, and engaging driving dynamics expected from Volkswagen. However, its projected high pricing could prove to be a challenge, especially in a segment dominated by the Toyota Fortuner, which enjoys unmatched brand trust, resale value, and market presence. While the Tayron may appeal to buyers seeking something more refined and European, converting that interest into strong sales will largely depend on pricing strategy and brand positioning.
