Mahindra Thar has been a runaway success for the Indian SUV maker. The 4X4 SUV is known for its extreme off-roading capability. But its size, especially its 3-door design, creates a limitation of use in city and day-to-day scenarios, or for family usage. However, Mahindra knows this and it is working on the 5-door Thar which, according to the latest media reports, is expected to launch in India sometime early next year. But the bigger question is what new or different feature will the 5-door Thar offer in comparison to its 3-door version? In this article, we have described 5 new features that you can expect in the upcoming 5-door Thar.
5-Door Mahindra Thar With A Sunroof
Recently the 5-door Mahindra Thar was spotted during its road testing in India. This test unit of Thar 5-door had a single pane sunroof. This clearly confirms the presence of a single pane sunroof in the upcoming 5-door Thar.
5-Door Mahindra Thar With A New Front Central Console With Armrest
There have been many recent sightings of the 5-door Thar test vehicles in the recent few months. In one of the sightings, the 5-door Thar's interior was spotted. It revealed a different front central console along with a front central armrest. The addition of this feature in the 5-door Thar will ensure more driver comfort on longer drives, especially for the drivers of automatic transmission Thar. Similarly, Mahindra could also add a rear central armrest in the upcoming 5-door Thar.
5-Door Mahindra Thar With A New Infotainment System
In the new 5-door Thar, Mahindra might also add its new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that we already see in the Scorpio-N. Moreover, we also expect Mahindra to make this new 8-inch infotainment system available in the 3-door Thar as well, at least sometime after the launch of the 5-door Thar.
5-Door Mahindra Thar With A Metal Roof
The currently on sale 3-door Mahindra Thar comes with either a soft top or a hard top. However, the hard top is a hard polycarbonate material and not a metal material. The upcoming 5-door Thar is most likely to come with a metal top instead of the hard polycarbonate top. This will help in better structural strength and occupant safety.
5-Door Mahindra Thar With Front & Rear Camera
The Mahindra Scorpio-N gets a front camera along with a rear one. Similarly, Mahindra might also equip the new 5-door Thar with a rear as well as a front camera. This will be very helpful during parking or extreme off-roading situations. Mahindra might also add front parking sensors in the 5-door Thar, just like the Scorpio-N.

Verdict: Although the 3rd & 5th features in the list are not confirmed, we think that Mahindra will add these features to differentiate the 5-door Thar from the 3-door one and also to justify the higher price of the 5-door Thar. Mahindra might also add some more features like the AdrenoX next-gen connected car tech in the 5-door Thar, making the 4X4 SUV more modern & future-ready.
