Tata Motors Ready for CNG Automatic Cars If Demand Is High

Talking on the launch of the new CNG variants of the Tiago and Tigor, a Tata Motors' official responded to our team member's question on the possibility of an automatic gearbox with such a fuel type. The official reply did surprise us in a good way - yes, Tata will be able to launch CNG automatic cars if the market demand is high enough. This is a favourable answer to our article that went online last year - are there any CNG automatic cars on sale in India?

Till date, none of the car manufacturers have dared to experiment this way. While both Hyundai and Maruti offer CNG options, they all come with a manual gearbox only. Tata Motors already offers an optional AMT automatic with the Tiago and Tigor and the same could be offered with a factory fitted CNG kit - ofcourse if there is ample demand. This would offer consumers best of both the worlds - convenience of an auto and low running costs of a CNG set-up.

The Tiago CNG line up goes on sale from Rs 6.09 lakh onwards for the base XE variant. The Tigor CNG on the other hand is available in the higher trims of XZ and XZ+ with prices starting at Rs 7.69 lakh - all prices being ex-showroom, Delhi. Both the cars offer segment leading power and torque and we are assuming the same holds true from safety point of view as well. When launched years back, both the models came with an optional diesel motor too. However, post the implementation of BS6 emission norms, the diesel motor was taken off the market.
