KTM 490 Duke: All You Need to Know About This Upcoming Streetfighter

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • KTM 490 Duke spotted testing with early-stage prototype
  • Expected parallel-twin engine producing around 55-60 hp output
  • Positioned between KTM 390 Duke and 790 Duke lineup
  • Likely to feature premium hardware and aggressive streetfighter styling
  • India-made KTM 490 Duke expected launch by 2027

KTM appears to be finally preparing the perfect middle ground in its naked streetfighter lineup. The upcoming KTM 490 Duke has now been spotted testing, confirming that the Austrian brand is actively working on a new twin-cylinder performance motorcycle aimed at riders looking for more power than the 390 Duke, but without stepping into the expensive and intimidating territory of the 790 Duke.

Spy shots of the motorcycle reveal an early-stage prototype, but even in this unfinished form, the bike already gives away several important details about KTM's future plans in the middleweight segment. Filling The Gap In KTM's Lineup

KTM 490 Duke

At present, KTM's naked bike portfolio has a huge performance jump. The 390 Duke delivers around 43 hp, while the 790 Duke nearly doubles that figure with close to 95 hp. For many enthusiasts, there hasn't been a proper in-between option ever since the older 690 Duke disappeared from the lineup.

That is exactly where the 490 Duke is expected to fit in. Reports suggest the bike could produce around 55-60 hp, which would make it a strong upgrade for existing 390 Duke owners wanting more highway performance, smoother cruising and better touring capability without moving into superbike territory.

The bike is expected to target riders who want everyday usability mixed with aggressive street performance - something KTM has always been known for with its Duke range.

Parallel-Twin Engine Expected

One of the biggest highlights of the upcoming motorcycle is likely to be its engine setup. Unlike the single-cylinder engine used in the 390 Duke, the new 490 Duke is expected to feature a parallel-twin motor.

The test mule spotted recently appears visibly larger around the engine area, supporting speculation about a twin-cylinder layout. If KTM goes ahead with this configuration, the bike should offer smoother power delivery, improved refinement and stronger top-end performance compared to the smaller Duke models.

This engine platform is also expected to underpin future motorcycles such as the RC 490 and ADV 490, indicating that KTM is building an entire family of middleweight bikes around this new architecture.

Hardware

Although the prototype still carries temporary bodywork and unfinished panels, several premium components are already visible on the test motorcycle.

Expected hardware highlights include:

  • WP upside-down front forks
  • Large front disc brake setup
  • Radial-mounted front brake caliper
  • Trellis-style frame construction
  • Chunkier exhaust system
  • Aggressive naked streetfighter stance

The overall dimensions suggest that the 490 Duke will be noticeably larger than the 390 Duke, while still remaining slimmer and more manageable than the 790 Duke.

Design Will Carry Typical Duke DNA

The final design is still under wraps, but the prototype hints at KTM's signature sharp and aggressive styling philosophy. The motorcycle features a muscular fuel tank area, upright riding posture and edgy front-end proportions that are typical of the Duke lineup.

Since the test mule is still in early development phase, the production version will likely feature cleaner body panels, sharper lighting elements and a more polished overall appearance by the time it reaches production.

Made In India For Global Markets

Like several other KTM motorcycles, the 490 Duke is expected to be manufactured in India by Bajaj Auto at its facility near Pune.

This move will help KTM maintain competitive pricing while also using India as an export hub for European and global markets. Manufacturing locally could play a huge role in making the motorcycle more accessible in price-sensitive markets like India.

Expected Launch Timeline

KTM has not officially confirmed the motorcycle yet, but the early-stage nature of the prototype suggests there is still considerable development work remaining. Industry expectations point towards a possible global reveal at EICMA in 2026, followed by an India launch sometime in 2027.

Once launched, the KTM 490 Duke is expected to compete against motorcycles like the Aprilia RS 457 and several upcoming twin-cylinder offerings from brands such as TVS Motor Company and BMW Motorrad.

Verdict

The middleweight motorcycle segment is rapidly growing, especially among younger riders upgrading from entry-level performance bikes. KTM entering this space with a twin-cylinder Duke could be a major move for the brand.

If priced correctly, the 490 Duke could become one of the most desirable performance streetfighters in India and international markets alike, offering the perfect balance between usability, performance and affordability.
