Mahindra Scorpio Getaway Auto Spied - Cheapest 4X4 Pickup Of India?

Prior to BS6, we really had some cool cars. Cool and affordable. That's what the Indian market was before and we had some amazing and pocket-friendly rides to afford. Pick-up trucks were once a popular genre. The uber-cool design yet capable of conquering any road. We didn't just have one option but at least three to four in the kitty. They were Tata Xenon, Mahindra Bolero Camper (it's available for commercial use now for the most), Mahindra Scorpio Getaway and the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross. We still have the latter but it has now grown in pricing as well as performance. We can live with the performance but the prices are a bit high. Just recently, Mahindra Scorpio Getaway Auto was spotted on Indian roads and we wonder if it can be the cheapest 4X4 pick-up truck in India for private use if launched? Let's have a look!

The spied Mahindra Scorpio Getaway gets a left-hand drive set-up so it is safe to say, it is for international markets like Australia and South Africa. It is quite popular in these markets. Design-wise, at the front, the Scorpio Getaway borrows styling cues from the ongoing Scorpio model with halogen projector headlights, a seven-slat vertical grille design with chrome surrounds and a functional hood scoop. The hood scoop allows sufficient air to the engine.

Move to the sides and you get a similar design as the current Scorpio except for the alloy wheels. These are from the older generation model only. There's a 4x4 badging on the side of the cargo bay and the rear continues with tail lamps as seen on the first-generation Scorpio.

This spied model gets an automatic transmission and is powered by a tried and tested 2.2-litre, mHawk diesel engine. This unit produces as much as 140 bhp with a peak torque of 319 Nm. This same engine is used in the S5, S9 and S11 variants of the Scorpio. For the S3+ variant, this unit churns out 120 bhp and 280 Nm of maximum torque.

As of now, there's no info from the Indian carmaker if the Getaway will be launched in the country or not. But if at all it gets a green signal from Mahindra, it might be the cheapest 4x4 pick-up truck in India. We might also get a 4x2 model for the fanboys out there.

Feature-wise, expect the bare minimum with the base variant while the top of the line could get cruise control, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, manual AC, power windows, central locking and more. Safety equipment on the Getaway will include dual airbags at the front, ABS with EBD, a high-speed alert system, front seat belt warning, speed sensing door lock and more. We can also expect electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, rear disc brakes too from the new Scorpio Getaway.

Once launched, the Scorpio Getaway will lock horns with the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross and the upcoming Toyota Hilux. We expect the prices of the BS6 model to stick between Rs 12 lakh to Rs 17 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
