VinFast looks set to take its India EV push down to a more affordable price point. The Vietnamese brand has filed a design patent in India for the facelifted VF5, a compact electric SUV that would sit below the VF6 and VF7 in its line-up. The filing comes after the car was spotted testing on Indian roads, and it suggests the company is seriously weighing a launch here.

What the Patent Shows
The biggest change is at the front. The headlamps are slimmer and sit lower on the bumper, and the bonnet is new. The thick black cladding under the lights is narrower and blends into the dark lower bumper, so the nose looks sharper than the current car’s. The side profile is mostly unchanged, apart from new alloy wheel designs. Test cars seen overseas stay on 16-inch wheels.
The rear gets the most visible update. The tail-lamps are now chunkier and connected, and the reverse lights and indicators have moved from the bumper into the lamp units. VinFast lettering sits in the centre of the tailgate, with the VF5 badge on the right.
Inside
The cabin hasn’t been officially shown, but undisguised test cars spied in Vietnam in September give a good idea of what to expect:
- A more upright dashboard with a larger, free-standing touchscreen
- No separate driver’s display, so the touchscreen would also show the instrument cluster
- A new two-spoke steering wheel with flattened top and bottom sections
- A redesigned centre console with a rotary drive selector and two cupholders
- An all-black cabin with leatherette seats instead of the fabric in the current model
Battery and Range
Nothing is confirmed for India yet. In other markets, the VF5 comes with two battery options:
Battery | Motor output | Torque | Claimed range (NEDC) |
|---|---|---|---|
29.6 kWh | About 88-90 hp | 135 Nm | 268 km |
37.23 kWh | About 124-136 hp | 135 Nm | 326 km |
Reports differ slightly on power figures, so treat them as approximate. VinFast hasn’t said which version India would get.
Expected Price and Rivals
Estimates put the India-spec VF5 at around Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom), though that is not official. At that price, it would take on three EVs:
- Tata Punch EV: Rs 9.79 lakh to Rs 12.99 lakh
- Tata Nexon EV: Rs 12.49 lakh to Rs 17.69 lakh
- Mahindra XUV 3XO EV: Rs 13.89 lakh to Rs 14.96 lakh

What this Means for VinFast
VinFast’s India line-up so far has been priced well above this segment. The VF6, for instance, starts at Rs 18.19 lakh after a recent hike. A car priced around Rs 12 lakh would put the brand ahead of buyers in the Punch EV and Nexon EV bracket, where most of India’s EV market volume sits.
For now, a design patent only shows intent. VinFast hasn’t announced a launch date, India-specific specifications, or official pricing, and patents don’t always lead to showroom cars. If the VF5 does arrive, the final battery option and price will decide whether it is a real alternative to the Tata and Mahindra models or just another option on the list.
