Maruti Fronx Facelift Coming Soon: 3-cylinder Engine, Updated Features and More
Maruti Suzuki’s coupe-styled compact SUV has been spotted testing under heavy camouflage. The update looks modest on the outside but bigger underneath, with a new engine and a likely safety upgrade. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is one of the company’s biggest successes in recent years, and a mid-life update is now on the way. A fully camouflaged test car has been caught on camera, and although the wrapping hides most of the body, it gives away enough to show where Maruti is focusing: a new petrol engine, a stronger safety kit and a few hardware upgrades.

What the Camouflage Gives Away

The overall shape looks unchanged. The coupe-like roofline, the rear spoiler and the split headlamp layout, with slim LED DRLs on top and the main lamps lower down, all appear to carry over. Even the 16-inch alloys are expected to stay.
The changes start at the nose. The prototype wears a reworked grille with what looks like a sensor housing in the middle, a strong hint that ADAS is coming. The front bumper is likely to be tweaked, and the rear bumper may see a minor update. The tail lamps were still covered, so we can’t yet say if their design has changed.
Obviously - A 1.2 3-Cylinder is There
The biggest mechanical change expected is under the bonnet. Maruti is likely to replace the Fronx’s current 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol with its newer 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z12E unit. This engine debuted in the latest Swift and later reached the Dzire, and the recently facelifted Baleno and Toyota’s updated Glanza have also adopted it.
The logic is simple. The Fronx shares its platform with the Baleno, so it’s natural to move it to the same engine. In the Glanza, the unit makes roughly 82–83 PS and 112 Nm, and the Fronx should land in the same range.
Other powertrain expectations:
- 1.0-litre turbo-petrol: expected to continue unchanged, at around 100 PS and 148 Nm.
- Gearboxes: a 5-speed manual and AMT with the naturally aspirated engine, and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic with the turbo.
- CNG: the S-CNG variant is tipped to get an AMT option for the first time.
Expected Features and Safety Upgrades
Maruti is likely to bring over the equipment added to the facelifted Baleno. The spy shots don’t show the cabin, so these are expectations:
- Level 2 ADAS, potentially covering adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist and high-beam assist
- Ventilated front seats
- Tyre pressure monitoring
- Revised upholstery, possibly leatherette
- A better audio system
- Wireless charging, possibly with cooling
- Front parking sensors
The existing highlights should carry over, including the 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, six airbags and hill-hold assist. A sunroof has been mentioned as a hope by some, but nothing suggests it’s confirmed.
One detail stands out in the images. The test car appears to have rear disc brakes, whereas every current India-spec Fronx uses drums at the back. If the production car keeps them, it would be a meaningful hardware upgrade for a car that is often driven hard on highways.
Expected Price and Rivals
The Fronx currently starts at about Rs 6.9 lakh (ex-showroom), and prices go up to roughly Rs 12 lakh. The facelift is expected to start close to the Rs 7 lakh mark, with extra equipment pushing up the prices of the higher variants. It will keep competing with the Brezza, Nexon, Sonet, Venue, XUV 3XO, Kylaq, Magnite and Kiger, as well as its Toyota twin, the Taisor.
When will it launch?
Maruti hasn’t announced a date. Testing has only just come to light, so a launch in the coming months is likely, with the 2027 Bharat Mobility Expo (reportedly around February) a possible venue for the reveal. The Taisor is expected to follow with a similar update, repeating the Baleno-and-Glanza sequence.

Why it matters
The Fronx is a sales heavyweight. Between April and September 2026, it sold around 1.1 lakh units domestically, up more than 43% year on year, and it also led India’s car exports in that period. With numbers like that, Maruti isn’t reinventing the car. It is adding the safety and comfort features buyers now expect at this price, while moving to its latest engine.
