Range Rover Electric India Launch Confirmed, Bookings Open

Finally, Range Rover has confirmed the launch of its first electric model in India. Bookings for the Range Rover Electric are now open, JLR announced on September 2. The SUV is built at Solihull, the brand’s home plant since 1970, and marks Range Rover’s first fully electric model. Let’s take a closer look at this iteration of the ‘yacht on wheels’.

Powertrain and Range

Range Rover

Powering the SUV are two permanent-magnet motors, one on each axle, with each motor rated at 260kW. Together, they produce a combined 550PS and 850Nm of torque, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.5 seconds.

Underneath, the Range Rover Electric gets a 118.5kWh double-stack battery pack paired with an 800-volt electrical architecture. As a result, it offers a claimed WLTP range of up to 600km, while the real-world range is rated at up to 535km.

When it comes to charging, JLR claims the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in around 22 minutes using a 350kW DC charger. Furthermore, a 10-minute charging session can add approximately 220km of WLTP range.

Off-road and traction systems

The SUV gets Intelligent Driveline Dynamics and Integrated Traction Management. JLR says the system adjusts motor speed within 50 milliseconds, which it claims is 100 times faster than a combustion equivalent.

A Single Pedal mode allows hill starts on gradients up to 33 degrees. The SUV can also complete rolling climbs on slopes as steep as 45 degrees. Wading depth is rated at 900mm.

Variants and colours

Buyers can choose from the standard-wheelbase Autobiography trim, along with SV, SV Ultra and SV Black variants. Meanwhile, long-wheelbase availability will vary by market. For India, however, the long-wheelbase version is likely to be offered, given its stronger demand compared with the standard-wheelbase model.

A First Edition trim is also on offer, limited to Belgravia Green, Santorini Black or Varesine Blue paint. It pairs with a Light Cloud Ultrafabrics PU and Kvadrat interior.

Manufacturing

JLR has also upgraded its Solihull plant to produce the new model. As part of this transition to electrification, around 9,000 employees at the facility have been trained for electrification-related work, while another 1,500 employees across the West Midlands have received similar training, according to the press release.

Meanwhile, the battery packs and electric drive units are supplied by JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton. Interestingly, the same facility also produces the company’s internal-combustion engines.

JLR has filed over 300 patent applications tied to the Range Rover Electric, its highest count for a single model. The SUV carries an eight-year or 160,000km warranty on its propulsion system, though JLR notes exact coverage can vary by market.
