Vehicle scrapping in India is not only a new concept, but in addition to this, is also very tough as it was usually done solely by the unorganised sector. However, we are now seeing a number of carmakers entering this industry and offering us a better and organised vehicle scrapping experience. Having said this, if you are also planning to scrap a car in India, here are all the steps and procedures that you should know. Step 1: Contact The Scrapping Centre

If you are also planning to scrap a car in India, you need to contact the nearest authorised recycler or reach out to them via their official website. Once finalising an appointment, the vehicle should be delivered to the scrapping facility. Many of the recycling firms also provide towing services for cars that are no longer in running condition. The buyers need to pay for the towing charges in such cases.

Step 2: Complete The Documentation

Once the vehicle has been delivered to the scrapping facility, the owner will have to submit the original documents and NOC certificates. The value of the vehicle will be determined by weighing. It is usually four to six per cent of the original ex-showroom price of the vehicle.

Step 3: Vehicle Scrapping

Once the above-mentioned steps are done, the car is prepared for scrapping. To start with, parts like tyres, battery, CNG kit (if any), etc are removed after which all liquids like fuel, engine oil, transmission oil, brake oil, steering oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid, etc are drained out. Once this is done, the fuel tank and the exhaust too are removed from the vehicle. With this, the body panels, bonnet, boot lid, doors, fenders, etc are taken off the vehicle and then the cabin is stripped.

Other components like wiring harness, seats, floor mats and other running gear are separated followed by the removal of engine, suspension and brakes. The VIN plate is removed before the body shell moves to the crushing station.

Step 4: Recycling

The stripped-out body shell is dropped into a crusher and is then later sold for smelting. The body panels, trims, and other components that can be reused are sold off as spares. The authorised scrapping centres also ensure that no oils or AC gases are discharged onto land, or in the air. This ensures that the process remains environment-friendly.

Step 5: Collect The Certificate

The vehicle recycler has to provide the owner with a Certificate of Destruction. This certificate is used at the RTO for getting the vehicle de-registered. The scrap value too is paid to the ower via a digital transfer. As per the new scrappage policy, the owners will get a five per cent discount on the ex-showroom price and a twenty-five per cent discount on the road tax using this certificate. A full waiver of the registration charges is also on offer.
