Update 28-11-2020: As of this date, new spy shot of the upcoming Hyundai micro SUV AX1 has been spied revealing new details. This time the spied top view shot indicates the presence of squared wheel arches along with a boxy character. Furthermore, as we have mentioned earlier the split headlight design, raked windshield, tall pillars, slightly larger grille design and more.

Among the boxy structure, it will now have more ground clearance which benefits in the Indian roads. Also, due to the tall pillars, one can also expect a good amount of headroom present inside the cabin. The launch is expected to be in the latter half of 2021 and it will be brought in South Korea first followed by emerging markets like India and Indonesia.

As we have said earlier in our earlier posts that with the rising trend of SUVs, every carmaker wants to get a share of its success in this segment. This micro SUV from the South Korean carmaker will be focused for the Indian and Indonesian markets specifically. It will sit below the Venue and will be the most affordable SUV from the carmaker. Hyundai also believes that it will take on the likes of S-Presso in terms of pricing and cater to a wide range of buyers. Do note that in just one year, Maruti sold 75,000 units of S-Presso which is huge. This defines the need of buyers that they want SUVish type stance even in smaller vehicles.

At first glance, the length of the AX1 is similar to that of Grand i10 Nios which is close to 3.8 metres. It will be longer than the entry-level hatchback Santro. Another look at it and you notice it takes its design inspiration from the Venue with its split headlight design. The LED Daytime Running Lights are present on top while the headlights stick to the lower part of the bumper.

Do notice the boxy type shape it carries along with large windows which will give less claustrophobic feel in the cabin. The rear door handles are positioned in the C-Pillar which gives it a sportier look. This type of design is also seen in the popular Maruti Swift and Tata Altroz.

In order to achieve the SUV stance, the height of the AX1 will be increased which will surely benefit the ground clearance of the vehicle. The side profile will feature a distinctive alloy wheel design and the wheels look like they measure 15-inches. Moving to the rear profile, the taillights are well proportioned in a horizontal form. Sharing the mechanicals then we expect it to carry the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated, four-cylinder petrol engine which we have seen in the new i20. This unit produces 82 bhp with a peak torque of 115 Nm. Sources also say that to keep the costs low, the lower costs could come with Santro's 1.0-litre petrol engine. Both the engines come with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. For the automatic, Hyundai could also offer an AMT gearbox for the same as an optional unit.

What do you think about Hyundai's latest take on the micro SUV and will it give a tough competition to Tata's HBX which sets its launch in May 2021?
