Why “Alpha”?
Honda picked the first letter of the Greek alphabet to signal a fresh start for its India customers. The Alpha is the production version of the 0 Alpha concept, which Honda displayed at the Japan Mobility Show in 2025.
Made in India Product
The Alpha will be manufactured at Honda’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. The company says the plant will eventually be the global production base for this SUV, so cars built here will also go to overseas markets. It is a notable vote of confidence in India as a manufacturing hub.
The announcement also introduced Honda’s new “H” emblem, which the brand is rolling out worldwide for its car business. The Alpha will be the first Honda in India to wear it.
Toshiyuki Yanagisawa, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, said the name reflects Honda’s ambition to bring advanced EV technology to Indian buyers without losing the quality, reliability, and driving enjoyment the brand is known for. He added that India’s role as a production base makes the Alpha an important step in the company’s electrification plans.
What to Expect from the Design
Honda hasn’t released technical details yet, but the SUV has been testing across India, including high-altitude runs around Manali and rough-road work near the Tapukara factory. Based on those test vehicles and the concept, here is what is expected:
- Exterior: A boxy stance with a flat bonnet, squared-off wheel arches, and an upright tailgate. Full-width horizontal LED light bars at the front and vertically stacked LED tail-lamps.
- Wheels: Aero-optimised 18-inch alloys, aimed at reducing drag and helping highway range.
- Cabin: Honda’s “Man Maximum, Machine Minimum” philosophy, with a landscape touchscreen and a separate digital driver’s display. The dedicated EV platform should allow a flat floor and good rear knee room.
- Features (expected, not confirmed): Ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic glass roof, wireless smartphone connectivity, and Level 2 ADAS under Honda Sensing.
Battery, Motor and Range
Nothing is official. Current expectations point to two LFP battery options in the 65–75 kWh range, paired with a single front-mounted motor driving the front wheels. Honda is yet to announce range figures or charging speeds.
Price and Rivals
Estimates put the Alpha at roughly Rs 17--14 lakh (ex-showroom). The two sources I used differ slightly, with one expecting Rs 17-22 lakh and the other Rs 18–24 lakh. Either way, it lands in the thick of the midsize electric SUV segment, up against:
- Hyundai Creta Electric
- Tata Sierra EV
- Maruti Suzuki e Vitara
- MG Windsor EV
- Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella
- Mahindra BE 6
Where it Fits in Honda’s India line-up
The Alpha will sit alongside the Amaze, City and Elevate, all made locally, and the Japan-imported ZR-V. It will be Honda’s only EV in the country for now.
