Upcoming Kia Sorento Spied Ahead Of September 4 India Launch

Kia is just days away from launching the Sorento in India, and the three-row SUV has now been spotted without any camouflage at a dealer yard. The sighting gives us the clearest look yet at what buyers can expect when bookings open officially and prices are announced on September 4.

The Sorento will be Kia's new flagship ICE-SUV in India, sitting above the Seltos in the line-up. It also marks the brand's first hybrid product for the country, along with a diesel option that carries over from the Carnival MPV.

Kia Sorento Spied: What The Sighting Reveals

Kia Sorento

The spotted unit is finished in a white shade and rides on large 19-inch alloy wheels. Its design leans on Kia's familiar Tiger Nose grille, vertically stacked LED headlamps and a boxy rear end that signals genuine off-road intent rather than just SUV styling for the sake of it.

Inside, the cabin follows a lighter colour theme, differing from the darker, brown-toned interior Kia showcased in its earlier promotional material. This hints that Kia could offer more than one interior colour option depending on variant, similar to how it handles trim levels on the Seltos.

Seating is expected to come in both six and seven-seat configurations, with captain seats reserved for the range-topping variant. The unit spied gets a conventional 60:40 split bench in the second row instead, along with the ability to slide and recline. Rear-seat passengers get dedicated air-conditioning vents and USB Type-C charging points, and the same has been extended to the third row as well, a detail few rivals bother with at this price point.

Boot access looks well thought out too. Straps inside the luggage area allow the third row to be folded down without needing to physically climb into the cabin, and switches near the boot lip can fold or release the second row electrically.

Engine And Powertrain Options

Two powertrains are expected to headline the India-spec Sorento. First up, the hybrid setup pairs a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor. Internationally, this combination produces around 240PS and 380 Nm of toruqe, and it is likely to be mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Meanwhile, the diesel version houses a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder engine that makes 202PS and over 440Nm of torque. It works with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Notably, this is the same unit currently doing duty in the Kia Carnival, so Kia already has local tuning experience with it for Indian conditions.

All-wheel drive is likely to be offered, at least on the higher variants, giving the Sorento genuine credibility in a segment where buyers expect more than just badge value.

Kia Sorento Expected Price In India

Kia has not confirmed pricing yet, and estimates from various sources have varied quite a bit in the run-up to launch, ranging anywhere between roughly Rs 28 lakh and Rs 40 lakh, ex-showroom. The more consistent expectation across recent reports puts the starting price somewhere between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 35 lakh, with the top-spec AWD hybrid variant likely to push closer to Rs 40 lakh.

Local assembly at Kia's Anantapur plant should help keep costs in check compared to importing the SUV as a completely built unit, and that is likely to reflect in the final pricing when it is revealed on launch day.

Kia Sorento Rivals In India

Kodiaq

Once launched, the Sorento will primarily go up against the Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron R-Line and Jeep Meridian. With CKD assembly likely, Kia should be able to hold pricing in the Rs 30-32 lakh region, putting it squarely in this set.

It won't really be cross-shopped with the Toyota Fortuner, though. The Fortuner is a body-on-frame, RWD-biased SUV, whereas the Sorento is a monocoque construction and primarily front-wheel drive, so the two cater to different kinds of buyers despite sitting in a similar price band.

Tayron Life

The hybrid powertrain is likely to be the Sorento's biggest point of difference, since none of its direct three-row rivals currently offer one in India.

What Happens Next

With the Sorento already spied without camouflage and bookings underway at select dealerships, there is very little left to reveal before the September 4 launch. Kia is expected to confirm the final variant line-up, powertrain output figures and pricing on the day itself. Given how close the launch is, expect more detailed spy shots and possibly a full walkaround video before then.
