What Are Fat Bikes? How Are These Different From Normal Cycles?

Cycles nowadays are available in a number of body types and with a number of features and equipment to make them more suited for a particular type of usage. While conventionally bicycles were offered as a more convenient and practical product and came with a compact frame and thin tyres, we today have a vast range of different types of bicycles in the market. To begin with, let me tell you that the bat bikes come with a robust and a light-weight frame which is made to handle extreme and stressful situations. What distinguishes these types of bikes from the rest are its big and wide tyres. First seen in the early 1900s, these bicycles were commercialised only after the 1980s due to the rising demands for off-road bikes. The large tyres and a tough frame helps the fat bikes to handle rough terrains. To give you a clear understanding, the width of a normal bicycle is measured to be somewhere around 25mm to 30 mm while in the other hand, a fat bike's average tyre width measures somewhere between 89 mm to 130 mm.

In addition to the wider tyres, the fat bikes also have a longer wheelbase which helps them tackle challenging terrains. Since fat bikes are used for off-roading, the tyre pressure of these bikes matters a lot. Recommended tyre pressure for different situations is given below:

• Soft terrains: 8 psi
• Trail Riding: 12-15 psi
• Urban Rides: 20-25 psi

The final tyre pressure has to be set in order with the rider's weight. Altering the tyre pressure helps in tackling a different type of scenarios. For instance, while riding this bicycle through softer terrains like snow and sand, decreasing the tyre pressure will provide the rider with better traction. Similarly, during urban riding, a higher pressure will give lesser rolling resistance thus making the overall experience less tiring.
