Yamaha R15 M Variant Could Be Discontinued

Yamaha launched the R2 in August at Rs. 2.30 lakh, ex-showroom. Now, Yamaha is reportedly planning to discontinue the R15 M variant to create some separation between its two products: the R2 and the R15. However, the brand has not confirmed this. The reason for the move is simple: the R15 M is priced too close to the base variant of the R2, which is slightly more powerful than the R15 M.

Currently, the R15 starts at Rs. 1.59 lakh for the base variant (S) and goes up to Rs. 2.01 lakh for the M variant, ex-showroom. This puts the R15 M approximately Rs. 30,000 - 39,000 below the base R2. By removing the M variant from the line-up of R15, the price gap between the R15 and the R2 would jump to Rs. 50,000 - 60,000.

With the difference of Rs. 60,000, Yamaha would offer buyers a more powerful 204cc engine that generates 26.5 PS of power and 19.1 Nm of torque, whereas the R15 M comes with a 155cc engine that produces 18.4 PS and 14.2 Nm. The R2 has 49cc more displacement, along with 8.1 PS more power and 4.9 Nm more torque. In addition, the R2 is equipped with a TFT instrument cluster and updated styling compared to the R15. This clearer distinction could also help buyers by reducing confusion and making it easier to choose the right bike.

The R2 also has a bi-directional quick shifter and three ride modes: Street, Sport and Rain. Other notable features include a smart key and adjustable suspension and controls.

Currently, bookings for the M variant remain open for the remaining stock at Yamaha dealerships.
