Delhi Airport To Replace All Vehicles With EVs

With the propagation of the motive of green mobility, the spread of awareness has led to the faster adoption of electric vehicles on road. Similarly, government authorities at the Delhi airport have planned to introduce EVs for commuting within the airside. Stay tuned to know more.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has recently decided to make use of electric vehicles on the airside for transportation. This decision has been taken in association with the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) under the Green transportation program. This announcement has been done in lieu of the occasion of World Environment Day which focuses on sustainable development without disturbing the ecological balance.

This decision would be regulated and brought into enforcement as per the directives from DIAL under the Green Transportation program as this would take place in a phased manner where the first phase would constitute the introduction of 62 electric vehicles dedicated toward airside operations. This will help to reduce at least one thousand tonnes of GHG emissions per year, thus contributing to environmental protection. The Delhi Airport plans to deploy these EVs within the upcoming three to four months as per the statement and discussions.

To charge these electric vehicles, multiple electric vehicle chargers with high voltage and fast charging would be set up at a specific location to set the requirements of these EVs at the Delhi Airport. This was a much necessary move as the vehicles at airports have heavy running per day and these emissions contribute largely to the overall quota of carbon footprint.

The authorities at the Delhi Airport plan to introduce EVs to eliminate any emissions and make it a net-zero carbon emission airport by the end of this decade. This is not only for an environmental cause but also to facilitate the environmental development of the site.

This is the first initiative in the aviation industry and they expect other organizations to pick up with environmental motives soon. To accomplish this task, the vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines would be phased out progressively to achieve the goal of a hundred percent electric mobility.

As electric mobility demands electric charge levels to be replenished in EV batteries, this electricity can also be fetched from non-renewable resources which can lead to the inefficiency of this project in the long run with an entire deviation from the basic motive. Therefore, the authorities at the Delhi Airport plan to juice up these EVs by charging from renewable sources only. This would ensure that the charging would be entirely emission-free and eco-friendly.
