Kawasaki Versys-X 300: Makes A Comeback With Localized Production

In November 2017, Kawasaki introduced the Versys-X 300 in India, priced at Rs 4.60 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). However, due to its lacklustre performance in the market and the arrival of BS6 regulations in 2020, the bike received no updates to comply with these regulations. Consequently, it silently disappeared from the official website. But now, there's news of its comeback. The reintroduction of this model is expected by the end of 2024. Test mules of the bike have also been spotted on Indian roads, indicating that Kawasaki is gearing up for its relaunch.

What's interesting is that Kawasaki has been working on localizing the Versys-X 300 for the Indian market. Following the footsteps of the Ninja 300 and W175, this will be the third bike to be localized. It is said that there will be significant localization, including body panels, engines, tyres, and more, similar to what we've seen with the Ninja 300.

The upcoming model of this bike will continue to use the trusted engine from 2017. It's a 296 cc, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke parallel-twin engine that produces 39 bhp and a peak torque of 26 Nm. Paired with a 6-speed gearbox, it will also feature an assist and slipper clutch.

The new model is expected to retain the same hardware and components as the old one, including spoked wheels and tubed tyres. It will feature a 19-inch wheel in the front and a 17-inch wheel at the rear. Just like its predecessor, the new model is expected to come with a 290 mm petal disc brake in the front and a 220 mm petal disc brake in the back, both equipped with dual-piston callipers. Additionally, ABS will be standard.

Kawasaki Versys-X 300: Features And Expected Pricing

The upcoming model is anticipated to feature a semi-digital display and basic connectivity features like Bluetooth. It's expected to come with standard features similar to its 300cc sibling. Regarding the price, it's not clear yet whether it will retain its previous high price or if Kawasaki will make it more pocket-friendly like its other models. It's expected to be priced between around Rs 3.30 lakh and Rs 3.80 lakh.

Verdict

The reintroduction of the Kawasaki Versys-X 300 with localized components and a more affordable price tag is a smart move by Kawasaki. With its previous disappearance due to market challenges, localizing the model for the Indian market could potentially boost its sales and popularity.
