Mahindra SUVs have always been a part of the Indian army's fleet. The vehicles are specifically designed as per the requirements of the army and are quite different to the regular models sold in the market with a host of mechanical as well as cosmetic enhancements. This time around we have come across images of an army-spec version of the Mahindra Scorpio Classic which also gets a 4WD system. For reference, Mahindra & Mahindra recently announced via a tweet that it has received an order of 1470 units of Scorpio Classic from the Indian army and these vehicles will likely be based on the previous generation of the ladder frame SUV.

Mahindra Scorpio Classic 4X4 Army Spec: What It Looks Like?

Going by the images, the Army Spec Scorpio Classic sports an all-new green paint scheme in line with the army-specific colour guidelines. Moreover, the army spec version seems to be based on the older gen model, rather than the latest model which goes by the name Classic. It is evident because the SUV sports the older Mahindra logo, front grille from the previous gen model and the familiar previous model alloy wheels. Along with this, the purpose-built vehicle gets a black bumper and heavy side body cladding, which we see in the base trim of the Scorpio Classic. Towards the rear, it gets a prominent 4WD badging, a dedicated tow hook and the tall stacked headlights section has been replaced by black dummy units, following the function over form philosophy.

Inside the cabin, the layout remains more or less the same as the regular model and it gets the same set of features such as a touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, steering-mounted audio controls, automatic climate control AC and more. Along with this, it retains the 7-seater layout, with the last row comprising of side-facing jump seats. There could be some extra bells and whistles specifically for the Indian army, details about which are unknown.

Mahindra Scorpio Classic 4X4 Army Spec: Powertrain

Under the hood, the army-spec Mahindra Scorpio Classic 4X4 could likely be powered by the 1st gen 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, which did duties on the previous Scorpio. The power output from the motor stands at 140 bhp and it comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The highlight of the show is the 4WD system which has been added to the package specifically for the Indian army.

Verdict: The army-spec Mahindra Scorpio Classic 4X4 is a true example of how far homegrown vehicles have come and are finding their way to the Indian army's fleet. The ladder frame construction as well as a potent powertrain along with a 4WD system makes the SUV capable enough to handle all kinds of terrain and serve the use case of the Indian army.
