Mercedes AMG SL 43 launched as an entry-level grand tourer, with F1 tech

The Mercedes AMG SL 43 will slot in below the SL 55 and SL 63.  It also features a turbocharger technology that is directly derived from Formula 1.

The Mercedes AMG SL 43 is the new entry-level grand tourer in the SL lineup. Unlike V-8 powered siblings SL 55 and SL 63. The SL 43 gets a turbocharged inline-four. Mercedes claims that the turbocharger features a technology that is directly derived from its F1 car.

The turbocharger in the Mercedes Benz SL 43 gets an electric motor, alongside a typical exhaust gas-plumbing. This inch-a-half thick electric motor is mounted on the shaft, between the turbine and compressor wheel. The whole point of this setup is that the motor will spin the compressor wheel before the exhaust gases do. Thus, in effect, it reduces turbo lag and a near-immediate response when the driver floors the pedal. It even helps maintain the boost pressure when de-accelerating.

With this party trick, the Mercedes Benz SL 43 becomes the first production car with the M139 2.0-liter to be fitted with this technology. It produces 375 hp and 480 Nm of torque, with a 9-speed AMG Speedshift multi-clutch transmission. Theres also an additional 48 V belt-driven starter generator that helps produces some additional 12 hp boost. Mercedes claims that the rear-wheel-drive SL 43 can do 0-100 kph in 4.9 seconds with its top speed rated at 270 kph.

Aesthetically, the Mercedes AMG SL 43 gets minor changes on the exterior. This includes rounded tailpipes, a simplified rear bumper, and a reshaped front bumper. The SL 43 rides on standard 19-inch wheels, with 20-inch and 21-inch as options, as well. As far as the cabin is concerned, the overall appeal will look like a quintessential Mercedes with the same MBUX infotainment screen, along with various driver-assist systems. The seats are wrapped in faux leather and a black gloss interior with aluminum and carbon highlights.
