New-Gen 2020 Honda City Production Begins in India; Interior Images Also Out!

A few days ago, Honda officially revealed the details of the upcoming New-Gen 2020 Honda City. The Honda City is one of the most popular sedans currently on sale in India. Honda entered the Indian market in the year 1998 with the City and since then it has become an aspirational product for the Indians. The Honda City has always been a benchmark in its segment owing to multiple reasons and it has been shining exquisitely since the last two decades. Hitherto, India has witnessed four generations and multiple facelifts of the City. And now, the launch of the new fifth-generation City is just around the corner. Honda Cars India has now officially commenced the production of the new-gen City.

Honda has commenced the series production of the upcoming new-gen 2020 Honda City at its Greater Noida Plant located in Uttar-Pradesh, India. The 2020 Honda City made its world premiere in Thailand last year and was supposed to be launched in India in April 2020. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the resultant nationwide lockdown, the launch was further delayed. Globally, this model is the seventh-generation City while in India it is the fifth-generation Honda City. After nearly three months of lockdown, in Unlock 1.0, Honda resumed its production facilities at its Uttar Pradesh plant. The production of the new-generation City has now begun and it is scheduled to be launched in July 2020.

Commenting on the start of production, Rajesh Goel, Senior Vice President & Director, Honda Cars India said, "We are delighted to begin the production of the all-new 5th generation Honda City which will be launched next month. The aspirational sedan comes with a rich legacy of over 22 years across four generations and has been synonymous with Honda brand in India. The excitement and anticipation around the 5th generation City in the pre-launch phase has been extremely encouraging despite the currently prevailing market challenges. The all-new City is an engineering marvel on all aspects of design, technology and features and will strongly appeal to our modern age customers."

The new 2020 Honda City will get BS6-compliant petrol and diesel engine options. It will be powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine that churns out 121 PS of power at 6600 RPM and 145 Nm of torque at 4300 RPM. The engine comes coupled to a 6-speed manual as well as a 7-step CVT gearbox. The petrol version of the new City also gets VTC (Variable Valve Timing Control) to deliver high fuel efficiency, low emission and spirited driving performance. The ARAI-claimed fuel-efficiency for BS6 petrol with MT is 17.8 kmpl while the BS6 petrol with CVT is rated at 18.4 kmpl. It also gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine that churns out 100 PS of power at 3600 RPM and 200 Nm of torque at 1750 RPM. This engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and the ARAI-claimed fuel-efficiency is rated at 24.1 kmpl.

Talking about other features, the new Honda City gets an 8.0-inch (20.3 cms) touchscreen infotainment system which is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. It also gets the next-generation Honda Connect system which will have a Telematics Control Unit (TCU) that can remotely share the car's status and other details. This Honda Connect System offers as many as 32 connected car features and it is India's first connected car with Alexa remote capability. Some other features include a one-touch electric sunroof, ambient lighting, lane-watch camera assist, etc.

The new-gen 2020 Honda City will be launched really soon in the country. Its official launch date hasn't been revealed yet but the launch is scheduled to take place in July 2020. The new City is expected to be priced between Rs. 10 lakhs - Rs. 15 lakhs, Ex-showroom Delhi. Once launched, it will rival against other mid-size sedans which include the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris, Skoda Rapid, and Volkswagen Vento.
