No Toll Tax For 2-Wheelers - Mr. Nitin Gadkari Clarifies
Recent viral reports suggesting the imposition of toll charges on two-wheelers across national highways have been definitively debunked by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari. Amidst widespread concern among commuters, the Minister took to social media to firmly declare these claims as false, reassuring the public that the long-standing exemption for two-wheelers remains fully intact.

The misleading reports, which speculated about the termination of complimentary FASTag for two-wheelers and the levying of fees from July 15, 2025, gained traction following the government's announcement of a new FASTag-based annual pass for private four-wheelers. However, both Mr. Gadkari and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) have issued clear condemnations, stating unequivocally that no such proposal is under consideration. Two-wheelers will continue to benefit from free access on the vast majority of toll roads and expressways nationwide, a policy originally designed to alleviate financial burdens and ease congestion, particularly for lower-income travelers.

The tweet read- "Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision has been proposed. The exemption on toll for two-wheeler vehicles will continue as before. Spreading misleading news without verifying the truth to create a sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this." While the statement was in hindi, this is the english translation.

Annual FASTag Toll Pass For Private Vehicles Announced At Rs 3,000
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is introducing a new FASTag Annual Pass, available from August 15 this year, designed to make highway travel more seamless. Priced at Rs 3,000, this pass is exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. It grants users up to 200 toll-free trips or one year of unlimited travel (whichever comes first) on National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) operated toll plazas, aiming to reduce congestion and provide cost savings for frequent commuters.
To avail this optional pass, your vehicle must have an active, properly affixed FASTag linked to a valid, non-blacklisted Vehicle Registration Number (VRN). It can be purchased and activated via the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app or the official NHAI/MoRTH websites. Importantly, the pass is non-transferable and does not cover state highways or private toll roads, and is ideal for those who regularly travel long distances on NHAI-managed routes, potentially saving them significant annual toll fees.
Verdict
The annual FASTag toll pass from August 15 for private vehicle owners and the anticipation of revenues falling down for the stakeholders made way for the rumour mill to drag two wheelers under the toll tax umbrella. While this has been now officially declined and the two wheeler owners can have a sigh of relief, make sure to check out the official channels before believing any such rumours in future.
