Kia Sonet, Carens Clavis Hybrid Coming to India by 2029: 6 New Electrified Cars Planned

Kia India is gearing up for one of its busiest product phases yet, with a wave of electrified models lined up for the domestic market over the next few years. While the brand has already entered the mass-market EV space with the Syros and the Carens Clavis EV, the next big push is set to come from hybrid powertrains, and this time, familiar nameplates like the Sonet and Carens Clavis are expected to join the electrified lineup.

A Six-Model Electrification Plan

Details shared at Kia's investor day outline a roadmap that could see as many as six electrified vehicles reach Indian showrooms by 2029, which include five hybrids and one all-new EV. This marks a shift in strategy for Kia India, which until now has leaned primarily on EVs to build its green credentials. Hybrids are set to take centre stage going forward, likely as a way to balance performance, efficiency, and affordability for a broader set of buyers.
Sorento Hybrid - Kia's First Hybrid in India

First up is the Kia Sorento hybrid, which is scheduled to launch in India on September 4. Positioned as a rival to SUVs like the Mahindra XUV700 and the Toyota Fortuner, the Sorento will be brought in as CKD units and assembled locally at Kia's Anantapur facility. Under the hood, it's expected to use a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol strong hybrid setup delivering around 238hp and 380Nm, the same unit offered on the global-spec model.
Interestingly, this same hybrid powertrain is also expected to make its way into the Carnival, with reports suggesting an India launch as early as 2026. Globally, the Carnival hybrid uses a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a 54kW electric motor and a battery pack, together producing around 242hp and 367Nm — meaning the Sorento and Carnival could end up sharing their electrified powertrains in India.
Sonet and Carens Clavis Set to Go Hybrid
Beyond these two, Kia is expected to extend hybrid technology across more of its India lineup by 2029, with the Seltos, Carens Clavis, and Sonet all tipped to get electrified versions, alongside a new A-segment electric SUV.
- The Seltos hybrid is rumoured to use a new 1.5-litre strong hybrid petrol engine focused on efficiency without compromising performance, with the same unit possibly making its way to the Carens later on.
- The Sonet hybrid is expected to use a smaller, more compact hybrid system, likely a 1.2-litre unit suited to its sub-4-metre positioning.
- Specifics on the upcoming A-segment electric SUV remain largely under wraps at this stage.
Given how closely related the Carens and Carens Clavis are as products, a hybrid variant of the Clavis derivative would be a logical extension of this strategy, aligning it with the brand's broader hybridisation push across its India range.
Filling the Gaps in Kia's SUV Lineup

Alongside the hybrid rollout, Kia is also said to be evaluating new products to plug a couple of white spaces in its portfolio. One gap sits between the Seltos and the incoming Sorento, where a three-row SUV or premium MPV, something in the mould of a Kia-badged Hyundai Alcazar rival, could potentially slot in with multiple powertrain choices.
The second opportunity lies between the Syros and the Seltos, a gap that's widened slightly as the latest-generation Seltos has moved up the price ladder. A new B-segment SUV around 4.2 metres in length could be introduced to address this, giving Kia a two-pronged approach in the mid-size SUV space without significantly overlapping with the Seltos.

Why This Matters
This aggressive electrification and hybridisation push ties in with Kia's broader ambition to expand its India lineup through 2030. It's also a strategic move to stay ahead of the upcoming CAFE III (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms, which will push automakers to improve fleet-wide efficiency. To support the anticipated jump in production volumes, Kia may also need to expand assembly capacity at its existing plant.
With the Sorento hybrid arriving next month and a steady stream of electrified launches to follow, Kia India looks set to significantly reshape its lineup over the next few years, bringing hybrid technology to some of its most popular models, including the Sonet and Carens Clavis, well before the end of the decade.
