Toyota Mirai Pilot Project Launched! India's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

To curb the effects of pollution on the environment, the government has successfully put up a campaign to promote electric vehicles. Alongside, the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Mr Nitin Jairam Gadkari has launched the project of India's first Hydrogen Fuel Cell electric vehicle, the Toyota Mirai.

The Toyota Mirai is powered by hydrogen fuel cell battery packs and boasts a range of up to 600 kilometres on a full charge. Hydrogen would be combusted to generate electricity with the only emission being water from the vehicle's tailpipe.

The Toyota Mirai has been introduced in the country for research and development purposes and is a part of the pilot project being conducted by the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) in association with Toyota Kirloskar Motors Pvt. Ltd. to study and analyse the vehicle's response in the harsh and diverse Indian climatic conditions.

The government foresees this project to be a chance to move faster towards the aim of getting rid of fossil fuels by promoting alternate fuels which won't cause any pollution. Mr Nitin Gadkari would himself be using this sedan and the hydrogen required to run it would be sourced from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). This project is an initiative to promote the use of FCEV technology commercially and evaluate the benefits of this technology to act as a substitute for petrol and diesel vehicles that cause pollution.
